Our military is going to remain a diverse military," Austin said. Austin did not weigh in on what he thinks about Trump's choice of Hegseth to lead the Department of Defense. “Hey hey, ho ho, thank you, Joe, it’s time to go!”The success of former President Donald Trump’s campaign is becoming a catastrophe for sitting President Joe Biden. The crowd erupted into cheers, chanting, "Tua, Tua, Tua!" Tagovailoa told reporters last week he opted not to wear a Guardian Cap, saying it was a "personal choice." The NFL’s top doctor said Tagovailoa would gain minimal benefit because he already wears a newer, more protective helmet. But the unspeakable violence inflicted on this community has spurred a very public purpose for the family: bringing awareness to traumatic brain injuries among military members and a call to action for continued research. Other family members also alerted local law enforcement, which visited Card's home in the weeks before the shooting but did not make contact. Maine's medical examiner requested a postmortem study of Card's brain, which was conducted by the Boston University CTE Center. Through Card's brain being examined after his death, Herling learned about so-called brain banks, a collection of donated brain tissue used for research and education. "Here, I brought the very helmet meant to safeguard my brother's brain," she said, showing the commission the military headgear.

A highly anticipated legislative hearing began Monday but without its key witness: a Texas inmate whose execution for his daughter's "shaken baby" death was narrowly averted last week. The high court, however, said Sunday it would not rule on the manner in which Roberson must testify. Roberson, 57, has maintained his innocence in the 2002 death of his 2-year-old daughter, Nikki, based on "shaken baby syndrome." But hours later, Roberson said, he woke up and realized Nikki was not breathing and her lips looked blue. Wharton, the lead detective in the case, has also voiced his support for Roberson, telling House committee members at a hearing last week: "This is an innocent man, beyond question."

Texas is preparing to put a man to death Thursday in what would be the nation’s first execution involving a case of “shaken baby syndrome,” a diagnosis that has been re-evaluated in more recent years, leading to the overturning of similar convictions. Prosecutors argued that Nikki must have been shaken to death because she had been diagnosed with “the triad” — a swollen and bleeding brain and retinal hemorrhaging — symptoms once believed to be indisputable evidence of shaken baby syndrome. In 2009, the American Academy of Pediatrics changed the name of shaken baby syndrome to the more broadly defined “abusive head trauma” to include injuries caused by mechanisms other than shaking alone. It is now medical consensus that other medical conditions, including infections, accidental trauma and pre-existing illnesses, can also cause the symptoms associated with shaken baby syndrome. Hundreds of possible shaken baby and abusive head trauma cases are reported to hospitals in the U.S. every year, according to a nonprofit advocacy group.

WASHINGTON — Kamala Harris is launching a seven-figure ad blitz about health care targeting Donald Trump’s calls to replace the Affordable Care Act with a mystery plan he hasn’t yet released. And the Harris campaign said it plans to follow it up with more health care-focused ads in the future. Asked when he will release his health care plan, the Trump campaign didn’t say. Health care was a major boon to Democrats in the 2018 and 2020 elections, according to exit polls, which said many voters prioritized health care and preferred Democrats over the GOP by wide margins. A recent Associated Press national survey found that voters trust Harris to handle health care over Trump by 50% to 30%.

Jon-Adrian Velazquez spent close to 27 years caught in the criminal justice system — nearly all of it behind bars in New York's Sing Sing prison, convicted of a murder he insisted he did not commit. Andrew Cuomo granted Velazquez executive clemency, citing his work in Sing Sing on an educational initiative by those incarcerated to combat gun violence, and he was freed after serving almost 24 years of a 25-year-to-life sentence. The results determined Velazquez's DNA was not on the key evidence. Since his release from prison, Velazquez has used his experience to become an advocate for criminal legal reform and even played himself in the 2023 drama "Sing Sing," based on an actual Rehabilitation Through the Arts program at the prison. The podcast "Letters from Sing Sing" was a finalist for a 2024 Pulitzer Prize in audio reporting and Slepian's book about the case, "The Sing Sing Files: One Journalist, Six Innocent Men, and a Twenty-Year Fight for Justice," was released this month.

WASHINGTON — All of a sudden, Kamala Harris is talking about the border — and relishing it. “It needs to be repaired, and we are working on that in a way that we establish a safe and humane and orderly immigration system at the border,” Harris said. As illegal border crossings soared, Harris’ critics blamed the Biden administration — and Harris herself. “For three and a half years, ‘border czar’ Harris has allowed terrorists and criminals to pour across our wide-open border,” he said. Now that the numbers are down, Harris' allies argue that Republicans are making an “active mistake” by trying to link Harris to them.
