Hurricane Helene made landfall in Florida Thursday, leaving less damage than initially feared. Sky-high insurance premiums and extreme weather have already prompted some Floridians to move. Multiple home insurance providers have left the state entirely, and longtime Floridians have started to get priced out of coastal towns. According to an analysis of US Census data by NBC News, around 18% of homeowners in Florida are without home insurance. She is charged with arranging the 2014 murder of Florida State University law professor Daniel Markel, who was shot in the head inside his Tallahassee garage. Political Cartoons View All 1247 ImagesHer son, Dr. Charlie Adelson, was convicted last week of arranging Markel's shooting through a girlfriend, Katie Magbanua. She employed her ex-husband and his friend, both members of the notorious Latin Kings gang, to murder Markel, 41. Charlie Adelson, 47, faces a mandatory life term when sentenced next month. In the conversation, Adelson told Magbanua that she would need to meet with the extortionist and agree to a one-time payment.

For nearly a decade, the sensational killing of a prominent Florida law professor in 2014 centered on a single, sordid question: Did his ex-wife’s family, motivated by an ugly custody dispute, hire hit men to murder him? On Monday, a jury concluded that it did, and convicted Charles Adelson, the former brother-in-law of the slain professor, Dan Markel, of first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder and solicitation of murder. Mr. Adelson closed his eyes, mouthed “No” and put his head down when the verdict was read at the Leon County Courthouse in Tallahassee, Fla. Mr. Markel, 41, a well-known legal scholar at Florida State University, was shot on July 18, 2014, in his home in an upscale Tallahassee neighborhood. The police found him wounded, and he died 14 hours later at a hospital.

Prosecutors contend Charles Adelson paid to have Dan Markel killed after Adelson's sister, Wendi, lost a bitter custody battle. Adelson said he didn't think Magbanua was orchestrating the extortion and was convinced she was protecting him from the killers. A judge ruled that Wendi Adelson couldn’t move the children from Tallahassee, and Markel refused to move to South Florida. He told Magbanua details of the proposal and the contentious custody battle, and she later told Garcia. It wasn't until three years later when she was on trial that he realized Magbanua was part of the plot, he told Cappleman.

The arrest of Florida resident Le’Keian Woods on Sept. 29 has sparked online narratives regarding his treatment at the hands of officers of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. Bystander footage of the arrest first circulated online with some users saying Woods, who is Black, suffered a disproportionately brutal arrest by white officers for a seatbelt violation, while others suggested the arrest was warranted because drugs were found in the vehicle with Woods. A graphic mugshot released by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) shows Woods with swollen eyes as well as a bloody, bruised face. JSO had no comment on Oct. 26 when asked whether the detectives involved in the arrest were still working. BODYCAM FOOTAGEBody-worn camera footage of the detectives involved released by the JSO, which begins after the vehicle stopped, shows Woods fleeing the vehicle.

They claim the Florida Constitution's privacy clause for more than 40 years has explicitly protected a right to abortion in the state. Florida officials contend the Supreme Court has in the past erroneously concluded the privacy clause covers abortion rights when it was actually intended more as a guard for “informational privacy, like the disclosure of private facts." The six-week ban DeSantis signed into law earlier this year would take effect 30 days after a Supreme Court decision to affirm the current ban. The privacy clause was put into the Florida Constitution by a voter referendum in 1980 and later affirmed as including abortion rights by the state Supreme Court. An appeals court overturned the injunction, bringing the case before the state Supreme Court.

DeSantis appointed the co-founder of right-wing parental rights group to the state's ethics committee. The group, Moms for Liberty, says its mission is to "stoke the fires of liberty." The group has proposed book bans and fought against mask mandates and teachings about racism and gender issues. The group, however, has rejected the idea that they are seeking to ban books. The state population is 27% Black, but the districts are drawn so that white voters are a majority in six of Alabama's seven congressional districts. The judges said they were reluctant to get involved in a task typically left to the states. In Georgia on Tuesday, a judge began hearing a no-jury trial on whether the GOP-controlled state legislature wrongly drew congressional and state legislative lines to dilute Black voting power. Louisiana – which has a Republican state legislature and a Democratic governor – has a population that is about one-third Black. But five of the state's six congressional districts are majority-white.

The NewsA Florida judge struck down the state’s congressional map on Saturday, ruling that it violated the Florida Constitution by diminishing the influence of Black voters, and ordering the State Legislature “to enact a new map which complies with the Florida Constitution.”Under state constitutional amendments that Florida voters passed in 2010, lawmakers are forbidden to draw districts “with the intent or result of denying or abridging the equal opportunity of racial or language minorities to participate in the political process or to diminish their ability to elect representatives of their choice.”In a 55-page ruling, Judge J. Lee Marsh of the Leon County Circuit Court ruled that lawmakers had violated that prohibition with the new maps they drew after the 2020 census. Judge Marsh rejected the Florida secretary of state’s argument that the prohibition didn’t apply to this case because Black voters had been a plurality, rather than a majority, in a district that the new map dismantled. The secretary inaccurately conflated two pieces of the law, he ruled. One requires the creation of new majority-minority districts in certain circumstances. The other limits the “diminishment” of existing districts in which voters from a minority group had sufficient numbers and influence to elect their candidate of choice, even if they weren’t an absolute majority — and that was the piece that applied to this case, he said.

The Florida Department of Education is investigating an elected superintendent who is a fierce critic of Gov. Leon County Schools Superintendent Rocky Hanna publicly criticized DeSantis for the governor's ban on mask mandates at schools during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. In a letter to Hanna, Florida Education Commissioner Manny Diaz, Jr. said the department had cause to "justify sanctions against your Florida educator certificate," according to the outlet. Hanna told The Daily Beast that he believes the state's investigation stems from a letter sent by a Moms for Liberty leader to DeSantis last year. The letter the group sent to DeSantis complained about the email Hanna sent to school staff at the beginning of the school year.
The Florida GOP plans to hold a no-confidence vote in Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel next month, a crucial test of the embattled leader’s strength just days before her own re-election. He issued the petition in response to Republican Party of Florida Chairman Joe Gruters sending out a letter Tuesday endorsing McDaniel. The messy race for national chair reflects broader troubles in the Republican Party. The two candidates vying to succeed Gruters as Republican Party of Florida chair, Leon County Chair Evan Power and Sarasota County Chair Christian Ziegler, both told NBC News they support Dhillon. "This is about who is best to be RNC chair, and that's Ronna."
At an election office in Flagstaff, Arizona, voters will encounter bulletproof glass and need to press a buzzer to enter. Election officials around the country said they were coordinating more closely with local law enforcement to respond quickly to disturbances. The Justice Department says it has investigated more than 1,000 messages to election workers since the 2020 election, including more than 100 that could warrant prosecution. PROTECTIVE MEASURESMany election officials blame disinformation, such as Trump's baseless claims about election fraud in the 2020 election, for the surge in threats. In Michigan, Republican candidates for governor, attorney general and other positions have questioned the outcome of the 2020 election.

The lawsuit accuses DeSantis of improperly using state funds by picking up migrants in Texas. Last year, the federal government sent 80 flights carrying migrants into Florida, according to Politico. The latest lawsuit, spanning 15 pages, was filed in state court in Leon County, where the state capital of Tallahassee is located. Pizzo filed the lawsuit in his personal capacity as a Florida resident. Pizzo filed his lawsuit against DeSantis, Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis, and Department of Transportation Secretary Jared Perdue.
