New York CNN —It’s a moment many shoppers grapple with at some point during a grocery run: Why does a carton of brown eggs cost more than a carton of white eggs? “It costs more to make a dozen brown eggs because the chickens that produce them tend to eat more.”Egg farmers say brown and white eggs are closely matched in their nutritional value. “If there’s brown eggs next to white eggs, typically you’re going to pay anywhere between 10% to 20% more for brown eggs, regardless of free range or organic,” he said. Brown eggs generally cost more in stores than white eggs. Looking specifically at the economics of producing brown eggs versus conventional white eggs, Anderson confirmed it does indeed cost more to produce the brown variety.

New York City will buy up millions of dollars of medical debt and erase it in a program that officials hope will ultimately help as many as 500,000 New Yorkers. Mayor Eric Adams announced Monday that the city would invest $18 million in a partnership with a nonprofit organization that buys up unpaid medical debt from hospitals at steep discounts and then erases it. Hospital systems and commercial debt buyers are often willing to sell medical debt at steep discounts, and the $18 million could wipe out over $2 billion in unpaid medical bills, city officials said. “Up to half a million New Yorkers will see their medical debt wiped thanks to this life-changing program — the largest municipal initiative of its kind in the country,” Mayor Adams said. Daniel Lempert, a spokesman for the nonprofit organization RIP Medical Debt, said that the group had begun conversations with New York City hospitals about examining their books to identify patients eligible for debt relief.

Instacart soared 40% above its IPO price on Tuesday as trading began. Its shares have since tumbled close to its debut price of $30 as momentum fades. The stock soared 43% in its trading debut on Tuesday, but most of those gains were wiped out the following day when shares closed at $30.10, just 1o cents above its float price. "Finally people can see under the hood related to Instacart that this is not a stable situation," he said. Instacart's plunge is a cautionary tale for other companies thinking of coming to market following Arm's successful debut last week.

New York CNN —Grocery shoppers in the Southeast can expect to see more Aldi stores starting 2024. Some of the nearly 400 Winn-Dixie locations Aldi is acquiring will keep the familiar red-and-white Winn-Dixie branding and traditional store layout, but many will convert to Aldi’s brand and bare-bones store format. The acquisition – which includes Harveys Supermarket – will add locations across Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana and Mississippi to Aldi’s portfolio. Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket had long been staples in the Southeast region. Aldi has not disclosed how many of the Winn-Dixie and Harveys stores it plans on converting, or how much the deal cost.

Mark Cuban might be a billionaire now but, before he became a successful entrepreneur, Cuban had to pinch pennies. Cuban, who lived in a three-bedroom apartment with six roommates at the time, didn't just look for deals on food, though. Cuban had "credit cards cut up" and "bill collectors" on his trail, he told Maher. Other 20-somethings wouldn't likely be able to copy his roadside strategy, he told Maher. It was all about going for it," Cuban told The Dallas Morning News in a 2011 interview.
Organic eggs are cheaper than regular ones, according to the largest egg producer in the US. "Specialty" eggs include kinds of eggs that have historically been more expensive, such as organic eggs and cage-free eggs. "Conventional egg prices exceeding specialty egg prices has occurred for the past three quarters but is atypical historically," Cal-Maine said in a statement outlining its second-quarter earnings. Organic and other specialty eggs still only make up a minority of the eggs sold in the US. Some consumers have started buying more expensive brands of eggs as prices on conventional eggs have gone up.
Fridge No More, Buyk, Jokr, and 1520 have shuttered or withdrawn from the US, while Getir, Gopuff, and Gorillas have cut staff. But analysts told Insider this may have led to blind spots when it came to the American consumer. And an insider told TechCrunch that month that Gorillas' monthly global burn rate was between $50 million and $75 million. YipitData suggests the average order for Getir, Gorillas, Gopuff, and Jokr was $21 to $32 in May. Are you a rapid delivery insider with insight to share?
Gorillas, which competes in Europe, is bringing its 10-minute delivery service to the US. Sümer believes Gorillas can break the habit of stockpiling groceries by offering US consumers on-demand delivery of "emergency" and "replenishment" groceries. He named the company Gorillas because his concept is "bold" and "authentic" just like a strong gorilla. It plans to expand to Italy in May, and also expand its delivery service to more US cities and European countries this summer. In Europe, Gorillas competes with Berlin-based Flink, Turkish delivery service Getir, and 10-minute delivery service Dija.
