  + stars: | 2024-11-26 | by ( Rob Picheta | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +5 min
CNN —German leaders raised the possibility that a fiery cargo plane crash in Lithuania on Monday was the result of sabotage or hybrid warfare. The cargo plane was flying from Leipzig, Germany, and was due to land at Vilnius Airport when it crashed a few kilometers from the runway. The plane skidded on the ground for several hundred meters before hitting a residential home, authorities in Lithuania said. “Our initial information does not indicate that we need to be investigating more serious actions,” Prosecutor Arturas Urbelis said in a statement, according to Reuters. DHL said the plane “made a forced landing about one kilometer from VNO Airport.” It confirmed four people were onboard.

LEIPZIG, Germany, Oct 25 (Reuters) - RB Leipzig strengthened their hold on second place in Champions League Group G with a 3-1 victory over gritty Red Star Belgrade on Wednesday. Yussuf Poulsen, the longest-serving Leipzig player who this week signed a contract extension, then forced a save from keeper Omri Glazer with a curled shot as the visitors initially struggled with the Germans' frenetic pace. Leipzig are on six points from three matches, three behind leaders Manchester City, who beat Young Boys 3-1. Red Star are on one point, the same as the Swiss side. Leipzig's Sesko uncomfortable with Haaland comparisons
  + stars: | 2023-09-26 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
BERLIN, Sept 26 (Reuters) - New RB Leipzig forward Benjamin Sesko is not comfortable being compared with Manchester City star striker Erling Haaland and while they have some things in common he says he has his own style. Haaland is already a treble winner with City after his first season there, while Sesko, who joined Leipzig this season, still needs to prove his worth on the big stage. He will get the chance next week when he will face off with Haaland in their Champions League group match. "If we do the same performance it could be possible but if it is not full power (against Bayern) then it will be hard," Sesko said. The Bavarians are chasing a record-extending 12th consecutive league crown but Leipzig could given them a run for their money, Sesko said.

July 19 (Reuters) - Germany's RB Leipzig have signed Netherlands midfielder Xavi Simons on a one-year loan from French champions Paris St Germain, both clubs said on Wednesday. The 20-year-old returned to PSG on Wednesday, signing a four-year contract following a year at Eredivisie side PSV Eindhoven. In the Netherlands Simons was league's second-best scorer with 19 goals in 34 games, helping PSV to a second-place finish as well as to the 2022-23 KNVB Cup. "We have been able to sign an exceptional young talent in Xavi Simons," Leipzig's Board Member for Sport Max Eberl told the club website. "I was immediately impressed by RB Leipzig's style of play and I strongly believe that my qualities will be a good match for this team and we can achieve a lot together."

DORTMUND, Germany, March 3 (Reuters) - Borussia Dortmund took a two-goal lead in the first half and hung on for a nervous 2-1 victory over RB Leipzig on Friday to go top of the Bundesliga and stretch their perfect run in 2023 to eighth straight league wins. "We had to tremble until the end but I prefer to win than to play well and lose. "It was our big wish to take over the lead in the Bundesliga and keep putting pressure." "But we have to keep our heads up as there are still a lot of great matches in front of us." Leipzig face Manchester City in their own Champions League last 16 return leg on March 14 after their 1-1 draw in Germany last week.
Leipzig's Orban to donate stem cells, doubtful for Union game
  + stars: | 2023-02-07 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
BERLIN, Feb 7 (Reuters) - RB Leipzig's Willi Orban will become a stem cell donor for a blood cancer patient with a procedure on Wednesday and is doubtful for Saturday's Bundesliga match against second-placed Union Berlin, the club said on Tuesday. "He could now give another human being a second chance," the club said in a statement. Orban, who has missed training since Sunday to prepare with special injections, will undergo the harvesting procedure on Wednesday. Leipzig said it was unclear if he would feature in their league match against Union. "I might of course miss the Union game but even with my sporting ambitions, football is of secondary importance," he added.
