CNN —A dance tune with two simple instructions and involving thousands of bouncing, orange-clad soccer fans has gone viral at this year’s European Championships. Prompted by the song, fans link arms and jump to the left. It might sound straightforward enough, but the sight of thousands of fans dressed in orange dancing and singing in unison while walking to the game has been something to behold at Euro 2024. Ahead of the Netherlands’ group game against France, Kemps went to Leipzig to help entertain the Dutch fans before the match started. While Dutch people have sung and danced to the song for years, Kemps says fans of Dutch soccer started adopting it after the women’s team won the European Championship in 2017.

Spain thought they had beaten Germany after Dani Olmo’s 51st-minute finish to a fine team move. Having beaten the hosts in dramatic fashion, some will now consider Spain the favourites to win Euro 2024. Spain had never previously beaten a host nation in a knockout tie at either a World Cup or European Championship. What Germany had to remember was that De la Fuente’s Spain are far more versatile in the way they play. His final game in professional football was mixed.

CNN —Euro 2024 host Germany was dumped out of the tournament on Friday after a 2-1 quarterfinal defeat by Spain in Stuttgart. With Germany seemingly out of time, Florian Wirtz’s slick finish in the 89th minute kept the tournament host’s hopes alive. However, in extra-time Spain conjured up their own late goal on 119 minutes, Mikel Merino heading home the winner to send the three-time Euros winner to the semifinals. It marks the second successive European Championships in which Spain has reached the semifinals stage while Germany’s run at its home tournament is over. Tournament winners in 1964, 2008 and 2012, Spain will play France or Portugal in the semifinals, with those two teams playing later on Friday in Hamburg.

CNN —The German interior minister has condemned the celebrations of Turkish defender Merih Demiral following Turkey’s win against Austria at the European Championship on Tuesday. “Using the European Football Championship as a platform for racism is completely unacceptable. And I felt that to the fullest after the second goal, so I ended up doing that gesture,” Demiral told reporters after the game. CNN has reached out to the Turkish Football Federation for comment. In a statement on Wednesday, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said that it is “unacceptable” for UEFA to open a disciplinary investigation against Demiral.

CNN —Merih Demiral scored twice as Turkey advanced to the quarterfinals of Euro 2024 thanks to a thrilling 2-1 win over Austria on Tuesday. But it is slightly unusual for people to talk as much about the ball as they have about the Adidas Fussballliebe Pro EURO 2024 match ball, to give it its full name, as they have in Germany of late. “I’ve not heard any goalkeeper complain about the ball, other than saying it’s a really, really quick ball, which is something you just deal with,” said the former Denmark and Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel, whose son Kasper is the current Danish No 1. “Normally, when you have a new ball, the opinions are divided but (goalkeepers) don’t think it’s a bad ball. Turkey held their nerve in their final group game in Hamburg to beat the Czech Republic and reach the Euro 2024 knockout stages. The action started in the 11th minute when Antonin Barak was handed a yellow card for a pull on Ferdi Kadioglu. And he was awarded a second yellow, and his marching orders, under 10 minutes later. Another phenomenon over the opening 12 days of the European soccer championship, however, has been fans throwing plastic beer cups onto pitches, or onto other fans. Meetings between Spain and Italy rarely disappoint and this one was no exception — even if it was an own goal that decided the contest. CNN —Cristiano Ronaldo made history by becoming the first player to feature in six European Championships as Portugal came from behind to beat Czech Republic 2-1 in Leipzig at Euro 2024 on Tuesday. The 39-year-old made his tournament debut back in 2004, when host Portugal was beaten by Greece in the final. Despite Portugal dominating proceedings, it was Czech Republic which scored first, courtesy of Lukáš Provod’s fantastic long-range effort in the 62nd minute. Czech Republic goalkeeper Jindřich Staněk failed to deal with a simple cross and parried it against his own defender, with the ball bouncing off Robin Hranáč into the goal. German automaker BMW imported at least 8,000 Mini Cooper vehicles into the United States with electronic components from a banned Chinese supplier, a U.S. Senate report released on Monday said. A report by Senate Finance Committee Chairman Ron Wyden's staff said BMW imported 8,000 Mini Coopers with parts from a Chinese supplier banned under a 2021 law and that BMW continued to import products with the banned parts until at least April. BMW Group said in an email it had "taken steps to halt the importation of affected products." The report found that Bourns Inc, a California-based auto supplier, had sourced components from Sichuan Jingweida Technology Group (JWD). That Chinese company was added to the UFLPA Entity List in December, which means its products are presumed to be made with forced labor.

Stone Age Paleo diet was not rich in meat, scientists say
  + stars: | 2024-04-30 | by ( Katie Hunt | )   time to read: +7 min
CNN —What did people in the Stone Age eat before the advent of farming around 10,000 years ago? Scientists analyzed chemical signatures preserved in bones and teeth belonging to at least seven different Iberomaurusians and found that plants, not meat, were their primary source of dietary protein. The evidence suggested that the Iberomaurusians consumed “fermentable starchy plants” such as wild cereals or acorns, according to the study. The work undermines the idea that a Stone Age diet was meat heavy — a rigid assumption perpetuated by present-day dietary trends like the Paleo diet. The transition to agriculture was a complex process that occurred at different times and proceeded at different rates, in different ways with different foods, in different places, Pobiner said.

With opulent graves but no written records, the empire and its people have remained largely in the shadows of history until recently. But a landmark April 2022 study involving ancient DNA taken from the graves of the Avar elite shed light on the empire’s far-flung origins. A tiny sample is drilled from a bone at the ancient DNA laboratory at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany. In the case of men, researchers found two partners in 10 cases, three partners in four cases and four partners in one case. “Polygamy (having multiple marriage partners), serial monogamous marriages and extramarital relations are all possible explanations,” she said.
