Edtech venture capital funding in 2023 may be on pace for its lowest annual total since 2016. The one exception to this edtech funding dropoff is in AI tools for education and upskilling. This puts the estimated total funding for 2023 at only $3.5 billion, the lowest annual total since 2016, according to HolonIQ. Additionally, there has not been a single edtech "mega round," or a startup funding round valued at over $100 million since 2022, with the exception of the Indian edtech unicorn Byju's $250 million fundraise this spring. Pujji and Mushin also indicated that AI edtech deals were the exception in this slowdown period.

The NHTSA is investigating two reports of the steering wheel on the 2023 Model Y falling off. In January, a Tesla owner said his steering wheel fell off when he was driving on the highway. The NHTSA says the inquiry covers over 120,000 Model Y vehicles from the model year 2023. The agency said it launched the probe after it was made aware of two reports of the steering wheel on the vehicle falling off while drivers were on the road. In both cases, the agency said the cars had low mileage and were missing a bolt that attaches the steering wheel to the steering column.
Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway has dumped most of its stake in TSMC, just months after buying the Taiwanese chipmaker's stock. TSMC TSMC, meanwhile, is sometimes seen as a barometer of the strength of the U.S. consumer, with Apple among its biggest customers. This is a Game of Thrones battle and AI is here to stay with Nvidia a great play on that front. TSMC is a global chip recovery play that is well positioned with Nvidia in the left lane of innovation," he told CNBC Pro. "TSMC is the short-term play with Nvidia more of the longer-term AI bet."
Prerak Patel said his Tesla steering wheel fell of while he was driving down a New Jersey highway. The driver said he'd received the Model Y just five days prior to the incident. Pictures of the steering wheel appear to show the wheel entirely detached from the steering column, only hanging on by exposed wires. He'd always wanted to buy a Tesla, he said, and saw an opportunity when the company lowered its prices for its Model Y and Model 3 on January 13. In 2020, Tesla driver Jason Tuatara posted photos of a Model 3 steering wheel that had fallen off.
Microsoft is the latest tech giant to have major layoffs, with plans to cut 10,000 employees. It's a strategy that will help these tech giants weather the ongoing downturn and come out on top, he added. Microsoft's layoffs also bring attention to the fact that the only tech giants that have avoided significant layoffs this cycle are Google and Apple. In another note to clients, RBC analysts advised C-suite leaders to bring down their quarterly and yearly revenue estimates even more. Got a tip about tech layoffs?
The Tesla’s driver told authorities that the vehicle’s “full self-driving” software braked unexpectedly and triggered the pileup on Thanksgiving day. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration then announced that it was sending a special crash investigation team to examine the incident. It’s delighted some Tesla drivers but also alarmed others with its flaws. The benefit and promise of Autopilot is clear from the Vehicle Safety Report data that we have been sharing for 4 years,” Tesla said this month in an update to its vehicle safety data. Reimer said it remains to be seen if there’s a recall of any Tesla driver-assist features, and what it means for the automaker’s future.
Surveillance video shows a Tesla stopping in a San Francisco tunnel and the resulting eight-car pileup. The Tesla driver said at the time of the accident that he had been using the carmaker's Full Self-Driving software. The video from The Intercept reporter Ken Klippenstein shows the Tesla moving into the left lane with its blinker and quickly coming to a stop in front of another car. On the day of the pile-up, a witness to the scene, Shayna Kelly of San Francisco, told KTVU that she saw the Tesla abruptly swerving. A spokesperson for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) told Insider the agency had launched an investigation into the crash.
