On a trip to Canada, my family missed an important ferry ride, messing up our travel plans. Before we leave home, we usually have several destinations, campground reservations, and various activities in place. On our trip to Newfoundland, we ran into some serious trouble and needed to recalculate our schedules. The campground owner was sweeping the floor of the store. Include extra days into your itinerary when travelingBecause of our difficult Newfoundland trip, we've readjusted our planning for family vacations.

It took us a lot of time and patience to turn our kids into campers. Related storiesWe started by taking the kids camping locally. AdvertisementChoose the right type of campgrounds for your familyThrough the years, we have used a mix of camping experiences, primarily staying at commercial campgrounds. Focus on nature and each otherThe key to making kids campers is to let them be a part of the journey and have interesting things for them to look forward to. Yes, making kids campers is tough initially, but it gets better with age — the kids' ages, not the parents'.

Read previewMy college journey began at 40 years old when I enrolled in a community college. Not only was I starting college later in life, but I was also doing it as a mother of five children — ages 8 to 14. The arrival of warblers, vireos and other colorful birds last week has excited Britain’s twitching community — enthusiastic bird-watchers who will travel long distances to view new or unusual species. A sighting of a Canada warbler was the first recorded in Britain and similarly, a Blackburnian warbler was spotted in Ireland for the first time. Experts said twitchers should act fast if they want to see the North American arrivals, as the phenomenon will last just a few days longer. That storm reached Britain and Ireland last week, bringing several inches of heavy rain to much of Wales and northwest England. A tiny number reached Britain and Ireland, he added.

"We believe that many more Gino-authored papers contain fake data," the Data Colada professors wrote. Data Colada found that the raw data showed clear anomalies, such as a distribution infinitely more likely to be produced by a random-number generator than actual people. Soon after, Data Colada ran an article alleging that Gino tampered with data in at least one of her honesty-pledge experiments. A post on Data Colada or a tweet from Brown is like a bomb going off in the behavioral-science world. Others who attempted to build on Gino's studies are grappling with having wasted time, money, and energy.

In North America, more than half of 529 bird species have declined, according to one study. Another study of 378 European bird species estimates numbers fell by as much as 19% from 1980-2017. There are birds on mountains, birds in cities, birds in deserts, birds in oceans, birds on farm fields and birds in parking lots. Bird numbers are falling across a broad range of habitats, as these graphs from Europe and North America show. A recovery program has boosted the species' numbers to more than 500, with several hundred living once more in the wild.

A clip with over 1.2 million views on Twitter that seemingly shows U.S. vice president Kamala Harris rambling during a speech by saying “Today is today, and yesterday is today,” was digitally created but has been shared online as if authentic. In the video (here), (tinyurl.com/y3xtjc94), (tinyurl.com/3jaa3h36), Harris appears to say: “Today is today, and yesterday is today yesterday. The footage was taken from an April 25 speech, during an abortion rights rally at Howard University. The vice president’s clothing at the Howard University speech matches the edited video, as do the people standing behind her. Dr. Dominic Lees, associate professor in filmmaking at the University of Reading, said the audio quality shows the video is not authentic.

A video that appears to show actor Morgan Freeman criticizing U.S. President Joe Biden has been created using deepfake technology, experts told Reuters. In the video, Freeman seemingly says: “Enough already, get this guy out of there. A spokesperson for Freeman told Reuters via email that the video does not show the actor. Dominic Lees, an associate professor of filmmaking at the University of Reading, told Reuters via email that the video is a deepfake. Video claiming to show Morgan Freeman criticizing Joe Biden was generated using artificial intelligence.
The version of the clip with altered dialogue being shared was created using deepfake technology, which manipulates audio and visuals to make it appear that an individual is saying something (here). There are signs of several techniques used to create the fake video, according to Dominic Lees, an associate professor of filmmaking at the University of Reading. “Voice cloning has been used to create the fake voices of Gates and his interviewer…The fake audio has been applied to a re-edited version of the interview,” Lees told Reuters. So, this analysis suggests the video is likely to be manipulated.”A spokesperson for ABC News told Reuters, “The video is clearly fake. The video shared on social media has been manipulated using deepfake technology and does not show an authentic interaction between ABC News journalist Sarah Ferguson and Bill Gates.
White House Spokesperson Saloni Sharma told Reuters the remarks “never happened.”Reuters found no public record of Biden saying this. “While the voice cloning is quite effective, the video manipulation is quickly discernible as fake,” he told Reuters via email. Reuters previously debunked another digitally altered video of Biden (here ). A White House spokesperson told Reuters Biden did not make such remarks about flying objects. There is no evidence that he said that, and experts told Reuters that the video circulating on social media has been manipulated.
A clip that seemingly shows U.S. President Joe Biden making transphobic remarks has been shared on social media as if authentic. There is no evidence that Biden ever made these remarks. Footage of this speech (bit.ly/3XbOjH5) shows Biden wearing similar clothes and the same flags behind him as in the manipulated video. Neither this clip nor the official transcript of this speech (here) include any of the remarks made in the video being shared online. There is no evidence that U.S. President Joe Biden made a series of transphobic remarks.

That doesn't mean you should stay put in a stable job if you're miserable, careers experts say. Workers have been worried about job cuts since the summer, with a July survey from Insight Global finding that 78% of US employees were anxious about job security in the event of recession. "There is definitely more competition for talented workers, so if people are interested in changing jobs, or getting a better job or looking for a promotion, it's a pretty good time to be doing it." Don't quit in a hurryOver half of American employees have said they'll look for a new job if there's a recession, June data from recruitment software company Greenhouse found. Be flexible about your demandsHaving a degree of flexibility during a recession can't hurt your job hunt.
As electric cars and SUVs move toward 5% of the new-car market in the U.S. and 9% globally, few airlines have made any major push toward electric planes. Sustainability plans being pursued by American Airlines , Delta Air Lines and Southwest Airlines barely mention electric planes. "Go back to the 1990s, there were hundreds of small aircraft serving a lot of communities that have now lost service." "There are literally dozens of companies that wouldn't have worked that are now viable startups that you'll hear about United Airlines and United Ventures investing in in the coming months." Most likely, electric planes will serve small markets, hydrogen-powered planes will serve medium-sized passenger loads, and SAF-powered jet engines will serve major cities.
That doesn't mean you should stay put in a stable job if you're miserable, careers experts say. Economists are predicting a recession that will accelerate unemployment in the US, and workers are worried their jobs are on the line. Some 78% of US workers are anxious about job security if the US enters a recession, a recent survey from Insight Global found. Although it may be tempting to quit your current job if you're unhappy, the effects of "unemployment depression" may be worse. Be flexible about your demandsHaving a degree of flexibility during a recession can't hurt your job hunt.
