In San Jose, a center of California’s housing crisis, one of the oldest and last remaining Japanese-owned farms in the state will be demolished to pave the way for urban housing. San Jose is home to one of only three existing Japantowns in the country and the only one built on agricultural roots. In July, the San Jose City Council voted to turn the Sakauye family’s 23-acre fruit orchard into a mixed-used development constituting nearly 1,500 apartment units and town houses. Vanessa Hatakeyama, the acting director of the Japanese American Museum of San Jose, said the Sakauye farm is a remnant of San Jose’s agricultural landscape — one that was built by Japanese immigrants — before it was transformed by the tech and suburban housing booms. In the mid-1990s the right was already moving toward climate change denial. The characters’ silence is louder at a time when in real life many Republican leaders continue to deny climate change is a problem. The current Republican platform doesn’t mention global warming at all, and GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump has denied the scientific consensus on climate change. In a 2022 survey, only 23% of Republicans thought climate change was a major threat.

The latest bad news on microplastics and human health emerged last week, when a study from researchers at the University of New Mexico examined 47 canine and 23 human testes, taken from neutering operations and cadavers, respectively. All of those testicles had microplastics inside — there were 12 different kinds of microplastic inside the organs studied, including the common plastic making material that plastic silverware and plastic bottles are made from. Woodruff isn't exactly surprised that microplastics are showing up in testicles. AdvertisementBut Dr. Ranjith Ramasamy, an expert in reproductive urology, says if it's true that microplastics are invading testicles, that's of extra concern. LONDON, Nov 10 (Reuters) - Scientists have rediscovered a long-lost species of mammal described as having the spines of a hedgehog, the snout of an anteater and the feet of a mole, in Indonesia's Cyclops Mountains more than 60 years after it was last recorded. The species has only been scientifically recorded once before, by a Dutch botanist in 1961. A different echidna species is found throughout Australia and lowland New Guinea. Kempton's team survived an earthquake, malaria and even a leech attached to an eyeball during their trip. They worked with the local village Yongsu Sapari to navigate and explore the remote terrain of northeastern Papua.

While live-in landlords are far from a novel concept, the pandemic-era fever around passive income and real-estate investing has sparked a rise in the popularity of house hacking. While Turner's initial strategy emphasized small multifamily buildings, some house hackers applied the concept to single-family homes. In 2019, he published a book called "The House Hacking Strategy: How to Use Your Home to Achieve Financial Freedom." And I think house hacking is one obvious way to eliminate, or at least drastically reduce, what likely is your largest expense." "Yeah, it's called 'house hacking," the owner and roommate, also played by Jarman, who has 4 million followers, replies.

Maryanna Harstad was stunned and then elated when she heard that the Supreme Court had upheld a law on Thursday aimed at keeping Native American adoptees with their tribes and traditions. Adopted herself by a white family nearly two decades before the law was passed in 1978, she was worried about the effect that overturning it could have had on Native children. “You always feel that you’re kind of this impersonator,” Ms. Harstad, 63, an enrolled member of the Leech Lake Band of the Minnesota Ojibwe and a descendant of the Blackfeet Nation of Montana, said about learning about her culture later in life. She knew very little about her heritage until she majored in American Indian Studies in college, and has since met her biological family and volunteered extensively with many Indigenous groups in Minneapolis. She is now a program director for Gichitwaa Kateri, a Native American Roman Catholic Church in Minneapolis.

Rep. George Santos has pledged several times to donate his entire congressional salary. "I owe you no explanation to what I do with my salary," he told Insider at the Capitol on Thursday. Two weeks ago, spokeswoman Naysa Woomer told Insider that "updates will be available at a later time," declining to provide further details. Pointing out that he's not legally required to disclose his salary donation details, Santos said that he still planned to make a salary donation announcement, but without any details. In May 2021, he again wrote on Twitter that he would "not accept a congressional salary at all."
LONDON, April 12 (Reuters) - Adler Group SA's (ADJ.DE) restructuring plan to prevent the German property company's imminent collapse was approved by London's High Court on Wednesday, despite opposition from some bondholders. He told a short hearing on Wednesday that he would provide his reasons for allowing the plan at a later date. Adler Group has external debts of approximately 6.1 billion euros ($6.66 billion), according to court documents filed by AGPS Bondco for last week's hearing. Under the restructuring plan, the company will borrow 938 million euros of new funding and the terms of unsecured notes that mature between 2024 and 2029 will be amended. A group of creditors that holds notes that mature in 2029 – including investment firms DWS Investment GmbH and Strategic Value Partners – opposed the plan, saying they would be better off if Adler Group were formally liquidated.

LONDON, Feb 6 (Reuters) - Barclays' (BARC.L) co-heads of equities, Todd Sandoz and Paul Leech, have stepped down from their roles and left the bank, a company spokesperson said on Monday, as the British bank continues a reshuffle of its investment bank's management. Stephen Dainton, who has run the business in the past, has taken over as interim global head of equities, the spokesperson said, in addition to keeping his current role as co-head of global markets. The bank now needs a single leader for the business to keep growing market share and returns, the memo said. Barclays is conducting a search for a permanent leader for the equities business, it added. The move is the latest in a series of changes at the top of Barclays' investment bank, after it last month appointed former Credit Suisse dealmaker Cathal Deasy and Taylor Wright as co-heads of investment banking.

GOP Rep. George Santos has pledged not to accept his congressional salary several different times. On Friday, his office told Insider he plans to donate his entire salary on a quarterly basis. A spokeswoman for Santos's congressional office told Insider on Friday that Santos will be donating the entirety of his congressional salary, making quarterly donations to an organization "such as a soup kitchen, or animal shelter." In a recent appearance on Steve Bannon's "War Room" show, he repeatedly dodged questions from fellow Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida about where that money came from. "I will not accept a congressional salary at all," he wrote in a May 2021 tweet slamming Suozzi.
The tech industry relies on skilled-work visas for foreign hires in a system critics say is broken. Now the USCIS is proposing fee hikes for visa applications, at a time when it's already challenging. It would be another hurdle on top of recent tech layoffs and scarce visa availability, experts say. While the proposed fee hikes are presented as a solution to end backlogs and address bureaucratic headaches, experts say they would make it more difficult to hire foreign talent. Are you an H-1B visa holder and have a story to share?

LONDON, Oct 24 (Reuters) - Former British finance minister Rishi Sunak will be Britain's next prime minister after his rivals quit the race, which analysts said had relieved some of the nervousness around the outlook for the UK economy, boosting domestic markets. The new Prime Minister needs to confirm their leadership team as soon as possible and provide clarity on their strategy for stabilising the economy and their policy priorities. ART HOGAN, CHIEF MARKET STRATEGIST, B. RILEY WEALTH, NEW YORK:"Coming to a very rapid decision on who the prime minister is going be certainly breathes a sigh of relief into the markets. RUTH GREGORY, SENIOR UK ECONOMIST, CAPITAL ECONOMICS, LONDON:"The fall in gilt yields on the news today that Rishi Sunak will become the UK’s next Prime Minister has reduced the chances of a significant fiscal consolidation. With the pound, just because we have a new Prime Minister in place, all of the issues don't just go away and we still have remarkable strength being enjoyed by the dollar."
