Republican senators who met Monday with Pete Hegseth, President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for defense secretary, brushed aside sexual assault and other allegations against him. Sen. Cynthia Lummis, R-Wyo., called the allegations a “side issue” while lauding Hegseth’s ability to lead the Defense Department. Hegseth did not respond to shouted questions from NBC News about the New Yorker article and other allegations. Senators offered their full-throated support to Hegseth after the meeting, downplaying the accusations. The Trump transition team did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the Republican senators' remarks.

South Korea's president, Yoon Suk Yeol, on Tuesday invoked martial law, a stunning move that threw the nation into turmoil. The last time that a South Korean leader declared martial law was in 1979 following the assassination of the president. South Korea's parliament voted unanimously to block the president's decree, declaring the shocking move invalid, but martial law remains in effect. The semi-official South Korean news agency also said that media and publishers fall under the control of the South Korean military. Hours after Yoon declared martial law, live TV showed South Korea's parliament passing a motion requiring the law to be lifted.

In today's edition, our reporters go through President Joe Biden's pardon of his son — and the part that's particularly rankling fellow Democrats. Some Democrats bristle at Biden's pardon justificationBy Carol E. Lee, Sarah Fitzpatrick, Gary Grumbach and Dareh GregorianIt’s not just that President Joe Biden pardoned his son Hunter. The pardon comes after Biden repeatedly said he would not use his executive authority to pardon his son or commute his son’s sentence. “Does the Pardon given by Joe to Hunter include the J-6 Hostages, who have now been imprisoned for years? : White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre defended Biden’s decision to pardon his son, despite telling the press multiple times that the president had no such plans.

Hunter Biden was scheduled to be sentenced on Dec. 12 for his conviction on federal gun charges. Republicans have for years attacked Hunter Biden over his foreign business dealings and accused him and the president of corruption. Together, the 12 counts Hunter Biden is convicted of or has pleaded guilty to carry a maximum prison sentence of 42 years. “I’m extremely proud of my son Hunter,” Biden said. “The clemency power has few limitations and certainly would extend to a Hunter Biden pardon,” Eggleston said.

China's manufacturing activity continued to expand among smaller manufacturers in November, signaling that the country's recent stimulus efforts have already helped to lift certain sectors of its ailing economy, according to a private survey released Monday. The Caixin/S&P Global manufacturing purchasing manager's index came in at 51.5, beating the median estimate of 50.5 in a Reuters poll. The Caixin survey tends to feature more small- and medium-sized firms as well as private sector companies, compared to the official PMI survey which typically polls large and state-owned firms. China's economy has shown some early signs of recovery following a slate of stimulus measures introduced from late September. However, Donald Trump's 2024 presidential win has raised concerns over increased tariffs on Chinese goods, which could dent its export sector.

CNN —Key Republican senators promised on Monday that President-elect Donald Trump’s pick to lead the FBI, Kash Patel, will be vetted through the confirmation process. At the same time, two incoming committee chairs suggested openness to Patel and Trump’s other nominees not undergoing full FBI background checks as has traditionally been done. CNN has reported that Trump’s transition team is bypassing traditional FBI background checks for at least some of his Cabinet picks. “No, I’ll let that be a decision that President Trump makes,” he said when asked if he will insist on background checks performed by the FBI. “My position is what President Trump decides to do is what I will support.”It’s unclear how many Republican senators would be open to not having FBI background checks for nominees, and other key senators have already affirmed the importance of background checks.

CNN —President Joe Biden’s decision to pardon his son has left some Democrats fuming over his choice to repeatedly and unequivocally claim that he would never take that step, even though a pardon long appeared possible to Hunter Biden’s legal team. That comes despite the White House saying that a final decision on the pardon was reached only this weekend. Press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said as recently as November 7 that a pardon for Hunter Biden was not being considered. Joe Biden’s decision to pardon his son presented a delicate balancing act for the president, who has long been fiercely loyal to his family, even when it comes at his own personal or political detriment. People close to the president’s son said they didn’t want him to have to undergo sentencing.

In a world where sentiment drives purchasing decisions, these differences in opinion could shape how much people end up spending this holiday season. Samsung Electronics on Wednesday announced changes in the leadership of its memory and foundry chip divisions, as the company faces intense competition in the semiconductor space. The South Korean tech giant appointed Jun Young-hyun as co-CEO and head of the memory chip arm, while Han Jin-man will become the president and head of the company's foundry business. Samsung Electronics was once the leading force in the memory chip sector, and appeared well-positioned to take advantage of the boom in artificial intelligence. Last month, Jun, who has been overseeing the semiconductor division since May, issued a rare apology after the company posted disappointing third-quarter profit guidance. Samsung's chip business posted a sharply lower third-quarter profit compared to the previous quarter.
