Older generations were overrepresented among those earning less than $1,000 per month, given they were much less likely to note that gig work is their primary income source.
Among those who use gig work as their primary income source, half are millennials.
A working paper from May 2023 found that the number of platform gig workers increased from 1.8 million in 2019 to 4.9 million in 2021, corresponding to a 170% increase.
Nearly one in four gig workers have been victimized by fraud or identity theft while using gig platforms — more than double the rate of those not using gig platforms.
Given real income is growing, some gig platforms are struggling to attract new workers while keeping services affordable.
