REUTERS/Lawrence Bryant/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNov 13 (Reuters) - A federal judge on Monday allowed the majority of claims to move forward in sprawling litigation that claims chemical hair relaxer products made by L'Oreal USA, Revlon and others cause cancer and other injuries. Illinois-based U.S. District Judge Mary Rowland denied most of the companies’ arguments in their motion to dismiss the complaint in the multidistrict litigation over the products. The products, which include chemicals to permanently straighten textured hair, are typically marketed to women of color. Representatives for L’Oreal (OREP.PA) and Revlon did not immediately respond to requests for comment. In a statement posted online after the first lawsuits were filed, L'Oreal said it was "confident in the safety of our products and believe the recent lawsuits filed against us have no legal merit."

Some of the ads show Black women applying hair products before cutting to a summary of the NIH study’s findings. “We do not believe the science supports a link between chemical hair straighteners or relaxers and cancer,” Revlon said. Lead author White said in a statement in response to Reuters questions that there is currently no strong evidence linking family history of breast cancer to increased risk of uterine cancer. The sisters said they wanted their mother’s death last year following a battle with uterine cancer to mean something. Bush, the St. Louis cosmetologist, joined the litigation in August, she said, because of the possibility that hair relaxers cause cancer.

This is because blast furnaces operate around the clock and need more workers. Goncalves is also betting that producing iron ore in-house for blast furnaces, rather than sourcing scrap steel for electric arc furnaces, will give Cliffs a competitive edge. While a few carmakers use aluminum for automotive bodies, most prefer high-grade steel from blast furnaces. Cliffs' devotion to blast furnaces, which are unionized unlike some electric arc furnaces, won it the support of United Steelworkers. The union's international president Thomas Conway said it's backing Cliffs' bid for U.S. Steel because of Goncalves' commitment to blast furnaces.

REUTERS/Lawrence Bryant/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsAug 23 (Reuters) - Privately held steel company Esmark said on Wednesday it would not participate in the purchase process for U.S. Steel Corp (X.N) and respect the position of the United Steel Workers (USW) union, which is supporting Cleveland-Cliffs' (CLF.N) offer. Last week, Esmark made an offer to buy U.S. Steel for $35 per share, or an equity value of $7.8 billion. Esmark's exit leaves Arcelor-Mittal (MT.LU) as the only known potential challenger to Cleveland-Cliffs, which went public with its bid for U.S. Steel earlier in August. However, U.S. Steel last week said its labor agreement with USW does not afford the union the right to veto a sale of the company.

U.S. Steel, which rejected Cliffs' $7.3 billion cash-and-stock offer as inadequate, had earlier said it was exploring "multiple unsolicited proposals". The stance comes after the USW said last week it would only back Cleveland-Cliffs as a suitor for the company. Even if U.S. Steel has not received any bids, the company must acknowledge that no such proposals have been received, Cleveland-Cliffs said. U.S. Steel had also attracted a $7.8 billion all-cash offer from Esmark Inc and a potential acquisition interest from ArcelorMittal SA (MT.LU).

Vance on Thursday asked U.S. Steel (CLF.N) to rule out a foreign buyer, in a sign that the emerging bidding war for the iconic steel producer could run into political headwinds. Vance, a Republican, said potential U.S. buyers for the Pittsburgh-based company should have priority because domestic steel production is an important aspect of national security. "It appears to be political grandstanding from somebody out making a name for themselves more than any national security interest, said Spoores, principal analyst at CRU Group. Vance was elected to the Senate in 2022 after winning the endorsement of former President Donald Trump, a Republican who also pushed for greater domestic steel production.

REUTERS/Lawrence Bryant/File PhotoCHICAGO, Aug 14 (Reuters) - The United Steelworkers (USW) international president said on Monday that the union supports North American steel producer Cleveland-Cliffs' bid to acquire rival, United States Steel Corp (X.N), adding that the company is the best strategic buyer. "Cliffs is committed to the blast furnace segment of the steel market and U.S. Steel is not," the union's international president, Thomas Conway told Reuters in an interview. The United Steelworker's collective bargaining agreement with U.S. Steel outlines that the company has to take union leadership voices into account for acquisition bids. U.S. Steel has said that it received "multiple unsolicited proposals."

Despite the surge, shares of U.S. Steel were trading well below the offer price at $27.92, indicating some investors believe a deal may not happen at that price. Cleveland-Cliffs shares were down 6.1%. A combination between the two firms will create the largest steel producer in North America and the 10th largest steel producer in the world and will be a dominant supplier to the transportation sector, KeyBanc Capital Markets analyst Philip Gibbs said in a note. U.S. Steel said it has invited Cleveland-Cliffs to be a part of the review process.

REUTERS/Lawrence Bryant/File Photo(Reuters) -United States Steel said on Sunday it is initiating a formal review to evaluate strategic alternatives for the steel producer after receiving multiple unsolicited bids for part or all of its business. The review was begun after the steel producer received “multiple unsolicited proposals that ranged from the acquisition of certain production assets to consideration for the whole company,” CEO David Burritt said in a statement, without disclosing details about the strategic alternatives. Barclays Capital and Goldman Sachs are serving as financial advisors to U.S. Steel, while Milbank LLP and Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz are acting as legal advisors, the steel producer said. U.S. Steel also expects to complete about $75 million of repurchases of common stock in the second quarter under its existing $500 million stock buyback authorization.

REUTERS/Lawrence Bryant/File PhotoApril 3 (Reuters) - Planned Parenthood on Monday asked a state court judge in Utah to block a law set to take effect next month that would effectively ban abortion clinics from operating in the state. The case is before Judge Andrew Stone, who last year issued a preliminary order preventing the state from enforcing an earlier abortion ban while he hears a legal challenge by Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood argued that Stone should block the newer law for the same reason, saying it would ban 95% of abortions in the state if allowed to take effect on May 3. "As promised, Planned Parenthood Association of Utah is fighting back and doing everything in our power to make sure that Utahns can get the care they need to stay healthy," Sarah Stoez, interim president and CEO of Planned Parenthood Association of Utah, said in a statement. Twelve of the 50 U.S. states now ban abortion outright while many others prohibit it after a certain length of pregnancy, according to the Guttmacher Institute, a research organization that supports abortion rights.

"Big corporations like Kia and Hyundai must be held accountable for endangering our residents and putting profit over people,” said St. Louis Mayor Tishaura Jones. Many Hyundai and Kia vehicles have no electronic immobilizers, which prevent break-ins and bypassing the ignition. Since May 2022, St. Louis police received more than 4,500 reports of thefts of Kia or Hyundai vehicles. Sixty-one percent of vehicles stolen in St. Louis have been Kias and Hyundais, St. Louis said.
