CNN —House Speaker Kevin McCarthy faces a challenge Friday morning: A razor thin margin to get a must-pass defense policy bill over the finish line with a majority of Democrats signaling they cannot support the version of the legislation crafted by conservative Republicans. The bill – known as the National Defense Authorization Act – sets the policy agenda and authorizes funding for the Department of Defense. If they lose that many members, it would greatly increase the prospects that Republicans could muscle the bill through. Without Democratic support, Republicans will need to wrangle nearly every member of the GOP conference in order to get the bill over the finish line. Many Democrats made clear ahead of the vote that if the amendment was included as part of the defense bill, they would be unlikely to support final passage.

A screenshot purporting to show a Feb. 5 tweet by Republican Congresswoman Lauren Boebert about Big Tech is from a parody account, not Boebert’s real Twitter account, but some users appear to believe it was an authentic tweet. The screenshot circulating on social media clearly states “Parody” and “Parody by Back Rub” on the bottom of the post. A search via Boebert’s official Twitter account (@laurenboebert) did not reveal the tweet shared online (archive.ph/LFd5Z). Reuters has reached out to Lauren Boebert’s representatives for comment but had received no response by the time of publication. The screenshot was created by a parody account and was not shared on Lauren Boebert’s official Twitter page.
CNN —A recount reconfirmed that GOP Rep. Lauren Boebert defeated Democrat Adam Frisch in Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District, the Colorado secretary of state said this week. Boebert received 50.06% of the final vote total, while Frisch received 49.89%, Secretary of State Jena Griswold said in a news release Monday. The net change in votes gave Frisch an additional vote, while Boebert lost three votes. Frisch conceded the race last month, but there was an automatic recount done by the Colorado secretary of state’s office. Boebert, a political newcomer in 2020, upset Rep. Scott Tipton in a GOP primary that year.
PALISADE, Colo.— Bill Heller , a retired oil-field worker on Colorado’s Western Slope and lifelong registered Republican, said he would like to support his party but found he couldn’t vote to re-elect his congresswoman, Rep. Lauren Boebert . Ms. Boebert (R., Colo.) has gained national recognition for her vocal support of gun rights and for attention-grabbing statements, including tweeting “Today is 1776” on the day of the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack. Mr. Heller instead voted for her opponent, Adam Frisch , a little-known centrist Democrat and former Aspen city councilman.
