But the idea of electing the first female president didn't strongly motivate people to turn out. They don't expect that America will have to wait much longer for a female president. "I voted for Vice President Harris, but there was so much pause in that decision — I debated it for weeks," she says. Harris' loss has not diminished Amiwala's optimism that the U.S. could elect its first female president soon. "I think Americans are ready for a woman president, it just wasn't meant to be Harris," Amiwala says.

But they may ditch their argument Friday morning, when the October jobs report is set to be released — just days before Election Day. Groshen disagreed, saying that initial estimates of the monthly change in hiring are “noisier than they used to be” because of the lower response. However, that gets smoothed out in later revisions as response rates improve with the additional time. That exacerbates the funding shortfall at the BLS, where inflation-adjusted funding has steadily declined over the past decade, she said. That would help improve, for instance, Federal Reserve officials’ ability to make interest rate decisions that hinge on the latest labor market data, Groshen told CNN.

A man who set himself on fire Friday outside the courthouse where former President Donald Trump's hush money trial is taking place has died, New York City police said early Saturday. The man, whom police identified as Maxwell Azzarello of St. Augustine, Florida, was in the designated protest area outside. It appeared to happen around the time that the jury for Trump's trial was fully empaneled — with 12 jurors and six alternates selected to sit for a trial that's expected to last about six weeks. It occurred just before the court took a lunch break. Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said Azzarello was born in 1987 and arrived in New York City earlier in the week.

There were silk and glass butterflies. There was an entree inspired by a California roll and a performance by Paul Simon. On Wednesday evening, as the Bidens hosted Prime Minister Fumio Kishida of Japan and his wife, Yuko Kishida, at the fifth state dinner of the Biden administration, Dr. Jill Biden, wearing an evening dress from Oscar de la Renta, stood with her husband to greet their guests of honor at the North Portico. Designed by Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim, the dress flowed in a watery fade from sapphire blue to light silver and was covered in hand-embroidered floral geometric beading. The start was typical: Oper Frankfurt in Germany asked John Cage to write an opera. But the premiere, in 1987, was unlike anything in opera up to that point. (Audience members also received varied plot synopses that read like opera Mad Libs.) The public wasn’t exactly equipped to receive what Cage had served them. Laura Kuhn, who runs the John Cage Trust and worked with him as he prepared “Europeras 1 & 2,” wrote in her dissertation on the piece that the reception in Frankfurt varied from “overt enthusiasm to no less overt bewilderment or disdain.”

A cut to national insurance — a levy paid by people who work — costing around £10 billion ($12.7 billion) is likely, according to multiple UK media reports. But soaring government debt, crumbling public services and a lackluster economy leave the chancellor with very little room for further substantial giveaways. Christopher Furlong/Getty ImagesOther so-called “unprotected” areas of the national budget, such as social care and the police force, are also at risk. “That seems unlikely when public services are creaking,” they added. After flipping the Arizona governor’s seat from Republican to Democratic last year, Gov. In five years leading deeply red Kansas, the Democratic governor, Laura Kelly, has named two justices to the Court of Appeals and one to the State Supreme Court. Governors have the power to appoint judges in nearly every state. Republican Kris Kobach’s action was his latest move to restrict transgender rights, following his successful efforts last year to temporarily block Democratic Gov. It’s also part of a trend of GOP attorneys general asserting their authority in culture war issues without a specific state law. Kobach maintains that failing to disclose when a child is socially transitioning or identifying as non-binary at school violates a parents' rights. But Kobach didn't cite Kansas law in his letters to the state school boards association, the Topeka school district and the Kansas City, Shawnee Mission and Olathe school districts in the Kansas City area. The state Supreme Court's brief order Tuesday shutting down the suit said legislators have fulfilled promises of annual increases in aid to the state's 286 local school districts as outlined in a 2019 law. But closing the case gives the Legislature more leeway on school funding issues in the short term. Educators who feel legislators aren't providing enough money or distributing it fairly enough were able to take their complaints directly to the state Supreme Court while the case was open. Four school districts sued the state in 2010, and the Supreme Court issued seven rulings from 2010 to 2019. The first six told lawmakers that they needed to increase spending or distribute the money more fairly or both.
