U.S. high school graduates looking for entry-level work might consider starting out at a company appearing on a new ranking from the American Opportunity Index. Released earlier this month, the list named 50 large companies as the best places for people with a high school diploma to launch their careers. The index scored companies based on three metrics: how likely they are to hire entry-level employees, promote them from within and set them up to land better-paying jobs when they leave. "We didn't see a whole lot out there for the 40% of high school graduates who aren't going off to post-secondary education immediately — most of whom have to find some sort of work," he continues. Rather than survey the companies, the index analyzed the career paths of around 5 million workers from 2018 until 2022 to make its assessment.

The second stage of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket sustained a rare but catastrophic failure Thursday night, disintegrating in orbit during the deployment of the company’s latest batch of Starlink internet satellites. In a posting on X two hours after launch, Elon Musk, the chief executive of SpaceX, reported that the rocket had suffered a “RUD” — rapid unscheduled disassembly — while in orbit. It remained uncertain whether SpaceX could salvage the 20 Starlink satellites jeopardized by the rocket malfunction. This is the first failure of a Falcon 9 rocket since 2016, when one exploded on the launchpad during the loading of propellants for an engine firing test. SpaceX launched a fourth test flight of its Starship rocket on Thursday, as the company looks to push development of the mammoth vehicle past new milestones. Each of the test flights have achieved more milestones than the last, but each result destroyed the rocket before the flight's end. SpaceX will be looking to surpass the third test flight's milestones. "The primary objectives will be executing a landing burn and soft splashdown in the Gulf of Mexico with the Super Heavy booster, and achieving a controlled entry of Starship," SpaceX wrote.

Boeing’s Starliner sits on the launchpad at sunset, at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida, on Friday, May 31. The entire stack, including the rocket and spacecraft, was rolled back from the launchpad for testing and repairs. Several issues also cropped up during the June 1 launch attempt, which was called with less than four minutes left on the countdown clock prior to liftoff. But moments before liftoff, the ground launch sequencer — the computer that tells the rocket to launch — triggered an automatic hold that prevented the launch. The United Launch Alliance team investigated the issue and replaced the computer over the weekend, and deemed Starliner ready to fly once more.

After two trips to the launchpad that did not end up going to space, two NASA astronauts finally headed to orbit on Wednesday in a vehicle built by Boeing, the aerospace giant. Boeing is now set to also provide that service, but a series of costly delays repeatedly kept astronauts from flying the company’s vehicle earlier. SpaceX, once seen as an upstart, has flown 13 crews to orbit in total. The long awaited flight of the Boeing vehicle is the latest step in NASA’s efforts to rely more heavily on the private sector for its human spaceflight program. “This is another milestone in this extraordinary history of NASA,” Bill Nelson, the NASA administrator said during a news conference after the launch.
