S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 futures each also ticked down about 0.1% each. Monday's action comes amid a market upswing that began following last week's presidential election won by Donald Trump. The Dow gained more than 300 points to close higher than 44,000, while the S&P 500 finished the session just over 6,000. "It's a lot of what we saw back in 2016 when Trump won the election the first time." The release of data from these inflation gauges comes after the Fed last week announced another interest rate cut.

Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Gary Gensler has sought to dramatically increase regulation of corporate America, vastly increasing disclosure requirements in particular. In response, corporate America has brought an avalanche of lawsuits against Gensler and the SEC. With a new regime now coming into the SEC following Donald Trump's victory in the presidential race, how will they respond to the lawsuits? Are there are any favorites for SEC chairman? Dan Gallagher, now serving as Robinhood's chief legal officer and formerly a Republican SEC commissioner, has been floated as a possible replacement.

Stock futures were little changed on Monday night, following a losing day on Wall Street as rising oil prices and bond yields weighed on markets. Even with the financial burden his student debt has brought him, Larry said he has tried to remain optimistic about the prospect of debt relief, given President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris' actions during their term. Larry and millions of other student-loan borrowers will have to keep waiting. It's the same argument a different group of GOP states used that led the Supreme Court to strike down Biden's first attempt at broad debt relief last summer. Their arguments are based on internal documents the states obtained from the Education Department to federal student-loan servicers regarding preparation to implement its second try at broader debt relief. According to the documents, the Education Department sent a memo to MOHELA saying, "In September of 2024, the Biden-Harris Administration will launch the Federal Student Loan Debt Initiative."

It's likely to further appreciate due to a lack of progress in narrowing the deficit, Tentarelli said. Historically, gold prices have been inversely correlated with real bond yields, meaning when yields decline, gold should rally further. "Even if there's no rate cuts, I like gold based on the macro of deficit spending," the Merrill Lynch alum said. In that event, investors will want to hold the SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) ETF, Tentarelli said. But, for most, the "smartest way" to play gold is through the ETF, Tentarelli said.

CNN —Toward the end of its 35th season, “The Simpsons” made a move that rankled some fans: It killed a longtime resident of Springfield. I would say under 10,” said Matt Selman, sardonic showrunner of “The Simpsons,” in an interview with CNN. There are around 16 writers per season, typically made up of 22 episodes, though this season has just 18 due to the 2023 writers’ and actors’ strikes. Last month, Sosthand won a Writers Guild Award for the episode, beating out three other nominees from the “Simpsons” writers room. It’s nice that their hard work has been noticed, Selman said, but critical appraisal of “The Simpsons” is always in flux.

The Fed and economic policy were top of mind this week given the central bank's Wednesday decision to yet again leave interest rates unchanged , as it has since last summer. This week included the conclusion of April's trading month, which marked the first down month of the year for all three major market averages. Indeed, some recent earnings reports have raised doubts about the economy, with brands from McDonald's and Starbucks evidencing signs of strain among consumers. While no new inflation numbers are scheduled for release next week, investors will see reports on March wholesale inventories, March consumer credit and May consumer sentiment from the University of Michigan. AI trade Though interest rates took center stage this week, investors also continued monitoring companies tied to the artificial intelligence boom amid the stocks' recent choppiness.

New York CNN —It’s “sell in May and go away” season. All three major indexes broke five-month winning streaks as hotter-than-expected inflation data stoked fears that interest rate cuts will come later than forecast. The central bank kept interest rates on hold at a 23-year high at its policy meeting. Persistent inflation has kept long-anticipated rate cuts on the backburner. It's an urgent question — what do we do with the 40 million tons of plastic waste we produce annually? One year of plastic waste is roughly enough to smother the entirety of Manhattan a meter deep, and it has to go somewhere. For decades, America sent its plastic waste to countries like China and Indonesia. Unlike aluminum or glass, the plastic that can be recycled rarely results in replacing one recycled water bottle with another. By downcycling a tiny portion of plastic waste, companies can genuinely reuse a relatively small share of plastic, while convincing consumers that the industry has created a circular economy of infinitely recycled plastic.

Opinion | How Biden Can Avenge Navalny’s Death
  + stars: | 2024-02-20 | by ( Bret Stephens | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
President Biden said last week that he was “looking at a whole number of options” to make good on his 2021 warning to Vladimir Putin that Russia would face “devastating” consequences if Aleksei Navalny were to die in prison. As several close Russia watchers told me, however, there’s much more to be done about the first. Browder is best known as the moving force behind the Magnitsky Acts, which put sanctions on Russian officials implicated in corruption and other abuses. And it’s been resisted by U.S. government officials who fear that it exceeds what American law allows and would encourage a flight from dollar assets. As for the flight-from-the-dollar argument, it might otherwise be persuasive if the need to save Ukraine and punish Russia weren’t more urgent.

(AP) — As the United States injects hundreds of billions of dollars into clean energy through its signature climate law, known as the Inflation Reduction Act, criticism is growing louder about where, how and whether new development should be allowed. MIT is offering a first-of-its-kind course that trains students to be mediators in conflicts over clean energy projects. Students get academic credit and hands-on experience addressing real-world dilemmas, while the community and developer get free help resolving conflict. In one recent Friday afternoon class, students debated everything from environmental justice concerns to misinformation to oil companies. He hopes to create a similar national consortium of universities serving communities and projects in their respective regions regarding clean energy.
