I planned to travel to Paris for my 40th birthday with my friend, but she canceled last minute. On one solo trip to Paris, I met my future husband, and it felt like fate. While I couldn't seem to do much about my marital status, I could take a trip to Paris. She wasn't going to be able to make it to Paris after all. I'm so happy that my friend decided not to join me for that first trip to Paris.

We come from very different culturesI soon realized that few private homes in France have an A/C unit. "Oh la la," he often says and rolls his eyes. "Oh la la," I mimic him with a smile. Most of the time, I just keep my faith in silence and try not to gloat when I make impossible things possible. Now that global warming has brought the heat of Texas to Paris, I have finally bought an A/C unit.

Read previewWhen the announcement came that the Summer Olympics would be held in Paris in 2024, I was psyched. I'm an American but live in the Marais district of Paris with my French partner, Benjamin. He was eager to make arrangements to get out of Paris as fast as possible for as long as possible. "Oh non non non non," he shook his head. Related storiesI told Benjamin and asked if he'd want to go.

Scores of people turned out Tuesday to testify well into the night on bills being considered by Nebraska lawmakers that target diversity initiatives and higher education programs, mirroring proposals by Republicans across the country. The bills before the state Legislature’s Education Committee included one that would ban diversity, equity and inclusion — known as DEI — programs and offices at state colleges and universities. Similar bills have been introduced in Republican-led legislatures across the country as the 2024 election year heats up. Already this year, Republican lawmakers have proposed about 50 bills in 20 states that would restrict DEI initiatives or require their public disclosure. Among them were several young people of color who grew up in the state or Nebraska college students who told lawmakers of the discrimination they've faced.

Verstappen's home Grand Prix, which he is looking to win for a third straight win from pole position on Sunday, is a guaranteed fixture through the 2025 season, but it is unclear what will happen after. "We feel Formula One is very happy with us," former F1 driver Jan Lammers, a Zandvoort native who was one of the driving forces behind the return of the Dutch Grand Prix, told Reuters. The enormous popularity of Verstappen, the first Dutch Formula One champion, has helped sell over 300,000 tickets in an instant every year, but Lammers said Zandvoort's appeal goes beyond its dominant home driver. "Traditionally, a Grand Prix offered just two hours of entertainment on Sunday. This approach was backed by Formula One chief executive Stefano Domenicali ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix.

Berlin CNN —Nationwide strikes in Germany — the biggest the country has seen in decades — are causing disruption at the country’s biggest port, airports, and on public transport Monday. The walkouts have been called by two major transport unions in Europe’s biggest economy. Flights at eight major airports, including those in Munich, Frankfurt and Hamburg, have been affected by the strikes. And some hubs such as Munich Airport closed their doors entirely, with 200,000 passengers impacted by the two-day closure that started Sunday. The drop is not just because industrial companies are turning down thermostats, they are also shutting down plants that may never reopen. And while lower energy use helps Europe weather the crisis sparked by Russia's war in Ukraine and Moscow's supply cuts, executives, economists and industry groups warn its industrial base may end up severely weakened if high energy costs persist. Reuters GraphicsThe International Energy Agency estimates European industrial gas demand fell by 25% in the third quarter from a year earlier. "We are doing all we can to prevent a reduction in industrial activity," an European Commission spokesperson said in an email. "From Jan. 1, we will be able to switch to oil," company executive Wolfgang Ott said, as the company seeks government help to cushion energy costs.
