London CNN —Britain, birthplace of rail transport, will get its first ever luxury sleeper train touring England and Wales next summer. The 18 cabins, including three grand suites and 15 suites, will be of an exquisite opulence not before seen on Britain’s rails. The unique charm of train travel compared to other luxury transport options, however, is the sociability. The Cornwall itinerary, in England’s southwest tip, takes in the rugged coastline of Penzance and the charming villages surrounding Lostwithiel. The Lake District, regarded by many as England’s finest natural wonder, is filled with dramatic peaks and serene bodies of water.

After my son was born, getting him out of the house felt like an insurmountable task. Once I'd mastered what I needed to bring with me to keep him happy, I took my son to the Lake District for a weekend without my partner. It's a bonding experienceMy son is now 3, and I've just taken him away on vacation for four days without my partner. Now, I find more peace and satisfaction than I ever thought possible in watching him throwing stones into a lake. There's a real joy to be had in slow travel, and solo adventures with my son have helped me to achieve that.

“It’s about this sense of something much bigger than we are,” Beth Porter told the audience at Rheged, an arts center in Penrith, just outside the Lake District in northern England. Five emergency bulbs illuminated Porter, her husband Ben Please and their menagerie of string instruments on the small stage. The pair glanced at one another across a pool of yellow light — a quick meeting of eyeballs. Porter kept singing. The journey from London had taken almost seven hours, significantly more time than when I first mapped the route from my desk in New Jersey.

Tax-free shopping for tourists has been axed, and EU visitors now need a passport to visit, which most don’t have. Matt Cardy/Getty ImagesAs a result of Brexit, in 2021 the UK government abolished tax-free shopping for non-EU citizens. It means the UK is now the only European country not offering tax-free shopping to visitors from outside the continent. “The impact of losing tax-free shopping is clear to see,” says Dee Corsi, chief executive of the NWEC. “Whilst the likes of Italy and France are actively leveraging tax-free shopping as a driver of growth, British businesses continue to trade at a disadvantage.

Against a backdrop of skyscrapers and super yachts, the airborne athletes competed in the inaugural Jet Suit Race Series, an event organized by the Dubai Sports Council and Gravity Industries, the manufacturers of the jet suit. Browning compares the 1,700-horsepower jet suit to “the power of a Bugatti Veyron” sports car in a 30-kilogram (66-pound) backpack. The jet suit uses aviation fuel or diesel, and can go at speeds of up to 136 kilometers per hour (85 miles per hour), Browning’s own record. In 2020, there was a fatal jetpack accident in Dubai, though it was not a Gravity suit.) Test pilots take off in Gravity Industries jet suits ahead of the inaugural race, in Dubai in February 2024.

My childhood was spent making dens in the hidden corners of the landscaped gardens of a grand country estate in the Lake District. I wandered woods full of baby pheasants being fattened up for the shoot. I had lakes to paddle in and a dinghy that we bumped down the path to a private beach. First in Yorkshire, then in Bedford, then on Graythwaite Estate, in Cumbria in the Lake District. For centuries, it was not uncommon for the offer of a job in the English countryside to include accommodation.

Sick of sewage, Britons protest at water companies' pollution
  + stars: | 2023-05-20 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
To the beat of a drumming band and waving placards, the protestors called on Britain’s water companies to do more to prevent sewage discharges. "We are sick of this sewage and they need to take action," Izzy Ross, Surfers Against Sewage's campaign manager told Reuters. Public anger has been fuelled by the payment of dividends to investors and large salaries and bonuses to water industry executives. Campaigners say water companies are discharging much more often than they should, including when there has been no rain. On Thursday, Water UK, the trade body representing the UK water industry, apologised, said the public was right to be upset, and said more should have been done to address the issue of spillages sooner.

The US is losing tech workers to other countries. And so, many tech workers are opting to move and work there instead of the US. Plus, many of these countries are making their immigration systems easier for tech workers. My teammates Emilia David and Paayal Zaveri break down how the US is on the brink of losing an entire generation of tech workers. And it showed that Boomers and Gen Z both love many of the same cars, including the Toyota RAV4.

Demand for rural homes in Britain dropped as the pandemic trend of relocating to the countryside faded, according to real estate website Zoopla. In the wider Lake District national park area, demand dipped 5% compared to the same period, and in mid-Wales it fell 10%. In April 2020, during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, 46.6% of people in employment did some work from home, according to the Office for National Statistics. The U.K. mortgage market fell into crisis in September following drastic policy shifts by then-Finance Minister Kwasi Kwarteng. Some market watchers are now predicting a major downturn in the U.K. property market as a result of the country's weakened economy and sticky high inflation rate.
CNN —The UK has greenlit a controversial plan to open the country’s first new coal mine in three decades, a little more than a year after the nation tried to convince the world to ditch coal at the COP26 climate talks in Glasgow. Committee chairman Lord Deben said in a statement: “Phasing out coal use is the clearest requirement of the global effort towards Net Zero. We condemn, therefore, the Secretary of State’s decision to consent to a new deep coal mine in Cumbria, contrary to our previous advice. This decision grows global emissions and undermines UK efforts to achieve Net Zero.”The mine’s approval was also met with fierce criticism from scientists and environmentalists. Its opponents argue these jobs may not be secure, given the huge momentum in Europe to phase out coal.
[1/2] SpaceX Starlink 5 satellites are pictured in the sky seen from Svendborg on South Funen, Denmark April 21, 2020. Ritzau Scanpix/Mads Claus Rasmussen via REUTERSLONDON, Nov 30 (Reuters) - Britain is to trial using low Earth orbit satellites to provide high-speed internet connections to remote homes and businesses, with the initial sites supported by equipment supplied by Elon Musk's Starlink system. Musk's SpaceX rocket company activated Starlink, a largely consumer-based service with hundreds of thousands of internet users, over Ukraine after Russia's invasion in February. "These trials aim to find a solution to the prohibitively high cost of rolling out cables to far-flung locations." As well as testing the technical capability of the satellites, the trials will look at what benefits faster internet connections will bring to these locations, the government said.

I've budgeted $50,000 for travel in 2019, and I'm not the least bit sorry. That said, we also choose to spend on travel over other things, like living in a bigger home or driving fancier cars. Keep in mind though, we would spend considerably more on travel (or need to travel less) if not for points and miles. Travel is a learning experienceMy kids are 8 and 10 years old, and our travel experiences have exposed them to so much history. The bottom lineWhile $50,000 is a lot of money to spend on travel (or anything, really), I don't regret our travel splurges at all.
