CNN —A Wisconsin man who officials say faked his own death and fled to Eastern Europe was charged with a misdemeanor count of obstructing an officer Wednesday after he turned himself in to authorities. At the request of the prosecutor, Slate did not order but instead requested the media not share images of Borgwardt’s family members. The following day, two fishermen casting along the lake found a fishing rod that belonged to Borgwardt, his wife told officials. In October, investigators learned from Canadian officials Borgwardt had entered the country on August 13. Borgwardt told police he didn’t realize organizations like that existed, the complaint says.

CNN —Ryan Borgwardt, a Wisconsin kayaker accused of faking his own drowning and fleeing the country, is alive somewhere in Eastern Europe and has been talking to investigators, officials said. “Great news: we know that he’s alive and well,” Green Lake County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Matthew L. Vande Kolk said Thursday. Borgwardt told investigators that he thought they would stop searching for him after about two weeks, officials said. He chose Green Lake, in part, because it is the deepest natural lake in Wisconsin. The FBI, Department of Homeland Security and the Wisconsin Department of Criminal Investigations are assisting investigators, Vande Kolk said.

A Florida deputy was killed and two others are hospitalized with injuries following an “ambush” shooting overnight at a home in Lake County, authorities said. Deputies with the Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded to a home around 8 p.m. Friday after receiving calls about a disturbance. The first deputy to enter the home was shot in the shoulder and was trapped inside the home, the sheriff said. A sheriff’s deputy was shot and killed on Friday evening in Eustis, Fla., while officers were responding to a report of an altercation in a neighborhood, the police said. The sheriff’s deputy was killed and another was injured when they entered the house at 7:45 p.m. in the Orlando Hills neighborhood of Eustis, a city north of Orlando, according to John Herrell, a spokesman for the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, where the deputy worked. Additional deputies were met with gunfire, and one was injured, when they entered the house to rescue an officer who had entered earlier and was trapped, Mr. Herrell said. The trapped officer was later pronounced dead. It was unclear how the two civilians had died, he said, and the injured person was taken to a hospital.

An Indiana father was killed and his two children were injured after they went through a grandfather’s belongings and found a hand grenade that detonated when someone pulled the pin, the authorities said. The explosion, which occurred Saturday sometime before 6:30 p.m., unleashed shrapnel that injured the father’s 14-year-old son and 18-year-old daughter, who were taken to a hospital, the sheriff’s department said in a statement. Their conditions were not immediately known on Sunday night, and the authorities have not identified members of the family. The father was found dead at the scene, the sheriff’s department said. A bomb squad was called to the home “to secure the area and determine whether there may be additional explosive devices,” the authorities said.
