A Wisconsin man who faked his own death and left his family three months ago after communicating with a woman in Uzbekistan has been in regular contact with the authorities and sent them a video this month, saying he was “safe” and “secure.”Mark A. Podoll, the Green Lake County sheriff, played the video of the man, Ryan Borgwardt, of Watertown, Wis., at a news conference on Thursday. In the 24-second clip, Mr. Borgwardt is seen recording himself in what looks like a spartan apartment with white walls and a gray door. “Good evening, it’s Ryan Borgwardt,” he says in a quiet voice. Ryan Borgwardt — a married father of two — went missing on Aug. 12 and his last known location was Green Lake, Green Lake County Sheriff Mark Podoll said during a news briefing Friday. Deputies found a capsized kayak in the lake and Borgwardt's vehicle and trailer parked in Dodge Memorial County Park, Podoll said. A Florida deputy was killed and two others are hospitalized with injuries following an “ambush” shooting overnight at a home in Lake County, authorities said. Deputies with the Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded to a home around 8 p.m. Friday after receiving calls about a disturbance. The first deputy to enter the home was shot in the shoulder and was trapped inside the home, the sheriff said. A sheriff’s deputy was shot and killed on Friday evening in Eustis, Fla., while officers were responding to a report of an altercation in a neighborhood, the police said. The sheriff’s deputy was killed and another was injured when they entered the house at 7:45 p.m. in the Orlando Hills neighborhood of Eustis, a city north of Orlando, according to John Herrell, a spokesman for the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, where the deputy worked. Additional deputies were met with gunfire, and one was injured, when they entered the house to rescue an officer who had entered earlier and was trapped, Mr. Herrell said. The trapped officer was later pronounced dead. It was unclear how the two civilians had died, he said, and the injured person was taken to a hospital.

An Indiana father was killed and his two children were injured after they went through a grandfather’s belongings and found a hand grenade that detonated when someone pulled the pin, the authorities said. The explosion, which occurred Saturday sometime before 6:30 p.m., unleashed shrapnel that injured the father’s 14-year-old son and 18-year-old daughter, who were taken to a hospital, the sheriff’s department said in a statement. Their conditions were not immediately known on Sunday night, and the authorities have not identified members of the family. The father was found dead at the scene, the sheriff’s department said. A bomb squad was called to the home “to secure the area and determine whether there may be additional explosive devices,” the authorities said.
A carjacker knocked and ran over a pregnant woman to steal her Volkswagen car. Volkswagen said the incident is a "serious breach of the process" it has in place for emergencies. On February 23, a 34-year woman, who's six-months pregnant according to news reports, pulled into her driveway with her Volkswagen car. A man got off the BMW, knocked the woman to the ground, and drove off with her car with the child inside, running her over, according to police. The woman, whose injuries were serious, according to the police statement, is in the hospital in stable condition, and her car was found abandoned in a parking lot.
