CNN —The Fulton County Jail in Atlanta unconstitutionally subjects inmates to “inhumane, violent and hazardous conditions” that threaten their safety, a US Justice Department official said Thursday, announcing the results of a 16-month investigation. “We cannot turn a blind eye to the inhumane, violent and hazardous conditions that people are subjected to inside the Fulton County Jail,” Clarke said. The deaths of Thompson and other inmates in the mental health unitThe 105-page report lays out examples of the problems it alleges, including the treatment of inmates with mental health challenges. Meanwhile, around 75% of the people who have died at the jail since 2021 had a mental health diagnosis or history of mental illness, Buchanan said. “The Fulton County Jail had as many stabbings in a single month as the Miami-Dade County Jail had all year, and that’s a facility with one-and-a-half times more people,” Clarke said.

A lead prosecutor and a judge involved in separate criminal cases against Donald Trump received violent threats within two days of the former president warning that he was "coming after" his foes, court documents allege. Prosecutors allege Arthur Hanson, 59, of Huntsville, Alabama, delivered the threats in voicemails left for Willis and Labat on Aug. 6. Smith cited the same post in a September court filing seeking a gag order against Trump. Later in August, Trump was booked and had his mugshot taken at Fulton County jail, which was run by Labat. ATLANTA (AP) — A Georgia state Senate committee says it will start its own investigation of jail conditions in the state's most populous county, three months after the U.S. Justice Department unveiled its own inquiry of Fulton County jail conditions. “Now, we can’t solve all the problems that Fulton County may have, or any other county for that fact,” Albers said. Fulton County's main jail, which opened in 1989 in a neighborhood west of downtown Atlanta, has been plagued by overcrowding, unsanitary conditions and violence. Six people have died in Fulton County custody since the end of July. Fulton County Commission Chairman Robb Pitts has said he wants to seek other solutions, in part because such an expensive undertaking would probably require a tax increase on Fulton County's million-plus residents.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump is expected to surrender himself to the Fulton County jail at the end of next week – on Thursday or Friday, a senior law enforcement official with knowledge of the surrender told CNN. After the 41-count indictment was unsealed, Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis set an August 25 deadline for their surrender. Trump’s expected surrender in Georgia comes the same week as the first Republican presidential debate of the 2024 election cycle. Fulton County Sheriff Pat Labat has previously suggested he wants to treat Trump and the others named in the indictment similar to any other defendant. The US Secret Service has been onsite at the Fulton County Jail for the last several weeks working with the Fulton County Sheriff Department and the city of Atlanta in planning for the former president’s surrender, a USSS spokesperson told CNN.

This means the former president’s surrender is expected next week – not Thursday or Friday – before the August 25 deadline. The Fulton County sheriff has said that all 19 defendants in the case, including Trump, are expected to surrender at the Fulton County jail, as is common procedure. The former president’s surrender and arraignment will look different in Georgia than in his previous three criminal cases. However, the authorities in Fulton County will need to coordinate with the Secret Service and Trump’s attorneys about the logistics of the former president’s surrender. The initial court appearance for Trump and other defendants is expected to be set by Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee, who has been assigned to the historic case.

Aug 15 (Reuters) - Former U.S. President Donald Trump was indicted on Monday for his alleged efforts to illegally overturn the Georgia vote in the 2020 presidential election which put Joe Biden in the White House. After defendants in Georgia are indicted by a grand jury, they are arraigned, which is the formal reading in court of the charges. Trump will have his mugshot taken upon being taken into custody, Fulton County Sheriff Pat Labat told local media this month. A jury of 12 people from Fulton County must all agree beyond a reasonable doubt that Trump is guilty for a conviction on any count. If Trump is convicted, he would likely seek a new trial by asserting the outcome was inconsistent with evidence or contrary to the law.

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis is wrapping up a probe of attempts to overturn his 2020 election defeat in the politically competitive state of Georgia. The front of the courthouse was lined with rows of orange plastic, water-filled Jersey barriers and steel crowd control barricades. Dozens of county sheriff's deputies were stationed out front, and other deputies and Atlanta police drove marked cars in circles around the streets nearby. Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, in an attempt to stop Congress from certifying his defeat. Samaya Lockridge, 23, a Democrat, who just moved from Tampa to Atlanta, said she hoped Atlanta would not see a replay of that violence.

Fulton County Sheriff Patrick Labat said that Trump would be processed like anyone else if he were to be indicted. "Unless someone tells me differently, we are following our normal practices," Labat told reporters. In recent days, barricades have been erected outside of the county courthouse, a possible sign that an indictment may be imminent. Labat told reporters that he sent a team to Miami to observe Trump's historic arraignment, allowing his team to fine-tune potential plans for Willis' possible charges. The sheriff said there have been "dozens" of threats as Willis' investigation begins to wrap up.

The sheriff of Fulton County, Ga., said on Tuesday that if former President Donald J. Trump were to be indicted in connection with efforts to overturn the 2020 election in the state, he would not receive special treatment, and would be booked and photographed like any other defendant. The Fulton County district attorney, Fani T. Willis, has signaled that she will bring indictments in the matter by the middle of the month. “Unless someone tells me differently,” the sheriff, Patrick Labat, said on Tuesday, his office would follow “normal practices, and so it doesn’t matter your status. We’ll have mug shots ready for you.”Sheriff Labat’s remarks raised the prospect that a former president could be booked at the county jail near downtown Atlanta. But it remains to be seen whether the Secret Service would weigh in and alter the sheriff’s plans, should an indictment of Mr. Trump come to pass.

The moves suggest that Fani T. Willis, the Fulton County district attorney, is expecting a grand jury to unseal indictments during that time period. Ms. Willis outlined the remote work plan and made the request to judges in a letter sent on Thursday to 21 Fulton County officials, including the chief county judge, Ural Glanville, and the sheriff, Pat Labat. “Thank you for your consideration and assistance in keeping the Fulton County Judicial Complex safe during this time,” wrote Ms. Willis, who has already asked the F.B.I. Ms. Willis had said in a previous letter that any charges related to the Trump investigation would come in the grand jury term that runs from July 11 to Sept. 1. Her letter on Thursday appears to offer more specificity on timing.
Fani Willis, the District Attorney of Fulton County, Georgia inside her office chambers in the Fulton County Justice Center Tower in Atlanta, Georgia on Tuesday, September 20, 2022. The Georgia prosecutor leading an election interference probe of former President Donald Trump and his allies said Monday she would announce charging decisions in the matter this summer. Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis said she plans to make her announcement during the Fulton County Superior Court's fourth term, which begins July 11 and ends Sept. 1. The probe began weeks after Trump urged Georgia officials to "find" him enough votes to overturn President Joe Biden's victory in the state. Law enforcement officials in Georgia were watching how Trump's arraignment in Manhattan played out, a source familiar with the Fulton County probe previously told NBC.
