Their parliament had met at midnight to declare a holiday after the national ice hockey team chalked up its best-ever result at the world championship. Latvia, where hockey is the national sport, was co-hosting the men's championship with Finland, and the Latvians' extra-time victory over the U.S. for third place was greeted with wild jubilation. At quarter to midnight on Sunday, sporting red and white national team jerseys, members of parliament convened for a ten-minute session to unanimously declare the holiday. The bill was introduced by a smiling member of parliament with her face painted in the colours of the national flag.

Latvia is planning to donate cars confiscated from drunk drivers to Ukraine's army. Latvia's finance ministry confirmed that the coalition government agreed on the proposal on Monday. The finance ministry is currently revising the proposal to prepare it for implementation, a spokesperson confirmed to Insider in an email. "Therefore, we believe that confiscated cars from drunk drivers in Latvia would complement this great initiative." Insider previously reported that a team of volunteers had been transforming donated civilian vehicles into military-grade fighting vehicles for Ukraine's army.
