WASHINGTON — As Congress returns this week for one last burst of activity before it wraps up the session, it faces a key deadline of Dec. 20 to avert a government shutdown. “We’ve got to do a lot of things at the same time,” House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., said of the first 100 days of Trump’s second term. “We’re going to be walking and chewing gum.”Some Republicans would have preferred not to get bogged down with a funding deadline early in the new Trump presidency. Rep. Mike Simpson, R-Idaho, a senior member of the Appropriations Committee, which writes funding bills, said there's little time. “Once they decide what they’re going to do — if they’re going to try to get any of these appropriation bills done before or whether they’re going to do a CR for all of them until March — I mean, that’s the real debate.

CNN —Frontier Airlines is the latest no-frills carrier getting into the premium seating game — with what it’s referring to as “first class-style” seats. The latest move by Frontier is another sign of the difficulty budget airlines have had making money on no-frills tickets. Frontier’s new premium seating announcement comes alongside other changes the carrier is implementing as part of a multi-pronged overhaul it is calling The New Frontier. Loyalty customers will be able to upgrade into the new premium seats, the airline said. Several bundled seating options already exist on Frontier.

One of Canada's large financial holding companies appears to be an attractive dividend investment opportunity, according to Scotiabank analysts. This development could boost Power Corporation's dividend growth rate, as Great-West represents its largest source of dividend income. "We think the value of the dividend growth is not reflected in the stock price and is underappreciated by the Street," the analysts added. Scotiabank's price target of 56 Canadian dollars ($40) is around 20% above the current stock price, with additional upside potential if dividend growth rates increase. The company recently agreed to sell its stake in Peak Achievement Athletics for around 440 million Canadian dollars, providing additional capital for potential shareholder returns.

Why your employer might love for you to quit

It’s also true, however, that sometimes they would like at least some employees to quit, and not just the underperformers whom they’d otherwise like to fire. When employers might welcome your leavingThere are a myriad reasons why an employer might push people to quit. It’s worth checking, too, if the employment laws in your state impose any other restrictions on the employer. … Poor management is not illegal,” said Brian Heller, an employee-side attorney and partner at Schwartz Perry & Heller in New York. The only leverage you have in this kind of situation is not to quit, since quitting is what your employer wants, Heller noted.

The mission assigned to Pat Gelsinger when he took over Intel as CEO in 2021 was to restore the then 52-year-old company to relevancy. Its business of designing and manufacturing chips — once industry-leading — was struggling. "By the time Intel began to work on AI chips, it was too late, and the company had basically no market share." Its line of AI chips, known as Gaudi, has paled compared to offerings from competitors like Nvidia. Doing so will require strengthening its fab manufacturing business, which The Futurum Group's Newman notes is no easy feat.

Axon Enterprise could be set up for continued gains in the months ahead, according to Morgan Stanley. Analyst Meta Marshall upgraded the stock to overweight, and her price target of $700 reflects about 10% upside from Monday's close. This comes as the stock has risen more than 146% year to date. "While the name is expensive and may need to grow into valuation given run YTD, over the long term, we see it as a core holding." "As a result, we are more willing to ascribe value to AI portfolio pulling through other products, which could lead to additional valuation upside (as prelim AI portfolio pull through is likely built into price after recent run)," Marshall continued.

For roughly a decade after that first auction, he continued to broker deals the conventional way — for American sellers, Aussie-style auctions were a tough sell. Real-estate auctions are a time-honored tradition in Australia, dating back more than 200 years to its days as a British colony. But in times of healthy demand for homes, auctions can deliver benefits for sellers looking to ride out the frenzy. "I don't think the American consumer is ready for auctions yet," says Rob Hahn, the CEO of Decentre Labs, a company he started in 2022 to bring online real-estate auctions to the masses. Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller said Monday he is anticipating an interest rate cut in December but is concerned about recent trends on inflation that could change his mind. That would follow a half-point cut in September and a quarter-point reduction in November. “As of today, I am leaning toward continuing the work we have started in returning monetary policy to a more neutral setting,” Waller said. Waller said he will watch incoming employment and inflation data closely. Even with the slowing progress on inflation, Waller said broader economic health has him feeling like it will be appropriate to continue to ease monetary policy.

In the messy patchwork of conflicts raging across the Middle East, one country has been absent from the spotlight: Syria. That he has survived was largely because of the intervention of Russia, Iran and Hezbollah, Iran’s Lebanon-based proxy. In all, the U.N. has documented more than 350,000 deaths but says this is “certainly an undercount.”Today, however, Russia, Iran and Lebanon are distracted and depleted.
