CNN —Police in Peru have arrested a man caught trying to leave the country with 320 tarantulas, 110 centipedes and nine bullet ants strapped to his body. The insects were packaged inside plastic containers and bags strapped to the man's abdomen. SERFOR/ReutersA search revealed hundreds of insects packaged inside ziplock bags strapped to his abdomen, according to the statement. Tarantulas are a threatened species, Walter Silva, a wildlife specialist at SERFOR, explained in the statement. SERFOR officials display the confiscated insects.

CNN —A two-level speakeasy in Mexico City’s hip Colonia Juarez neighborhood has been proclaimed the world’s best bar. Handshake Speakeasy clinched the title last night in Madrid, where a splashy awards ceremony was held by the World’s 50 Best association. The World’s 50 Best voters are a mix of industry professionals, including bartenders and food and drink writers. Named after a classic Japanese hairstyle, it was ranked the Best Bar in the Middle East and Africa this year. Toledo, a 78-year-old economist who holds a doctorate from Stanford University, governed the Andean nation between 2001 and 2006. Peruvian former President Alejandro Toledo was convicted of taking bribes from Brazilian construction giant Odebrecht and sentenced to 20 years and six months in prison on Monday. During the year-long trial, Toledo denied the money-laundering and collusion charges. The sentence was announced in a room set up in a small Lima prison where Toledo has been detained since last year. Prosecutors relied on testimony from former Odebrecht executive Jorge Barata as well as Toledo's ex-collaborator Josef Maiman, who said Toledo received bribes.
