That's due to a recent contraction in the money supply, which preceded past downturns, he told NYSE TV Live. The US economy is still likely to slow into a recession next year — and Trump's election victory may have just made the economic outlook even more challenging, according to top economist Steve Hanke. AdvertisementM2, one class of the money supply, shrank from mid-2022 to March 2024, according to Federal Reserve data. The M2 money supply started to re-expand this year, rising 2.47% year-per-year at the end of September. Trump's protectionist economic policies also impose a "big negative" for the economy, Hanke said.

Pure-play electric vehicle stocks like Rivian and Lucid are flat and down more than 3%, respectively, since Trump's victory. So why is Tesla soaring even as a second Trump administration is expected to fundamentally disrupt the U.S. electric vehicle market? And increased tariffs could make inputs for electric vehicles more expensive. These headwinds ignore the fact that Trump's new best friend is Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Bernstein analyst Toni Sacconaghi told clients in a Monday note. But Tesla's fundamentals are largely steady postelection, while Musk's relationship with Trump underlines how Tesla largely controls the self-driving vehicle narrative, the analyst said.

CNN’s national exit polling this year found that immigration was a strong issue for Trump in this election, but it doesn’t suggest a mandate for mass deportation. Voters gave Trump a roughly 9-point advantage over Vice President Kamala Harris on trust to handle immigration, according to the latest data. Complicating those findings is the fact that polling this year has found widely disparate levels of support for deportation. Surveys that ask respondents to choose between deportation and a path to citizenship, meanwhile, often find more support for the latter. Regardless of framing, however, national polls agree on a rise in support for deportation policies over recent years, coupled with a broader increase in nativist sentiment.

WASHINGTON — President-elect Donald Trump’s consistent campaign pledge to impose sweeping tariffs on products imported into the U.S. is likely to face stiff challenges in court and potentially pushback from Congress. There are potential legal limits to Trump’s authority, even though he has said he would unilaterally impose the increases. But a broad array of tariffs on allies “could cross the line,” especially as the Supreme Court has taken a generally pro-business stance in recent years, he added. During the Biden administration, the Supreme Court embraced a theory called the “major questions doctrine.” Biden’s ambitious plan to wipe out billions of dollars in student debt was one of the proposals the Supreme Court faulted. The Supreme Court declined to take up the issue.

Trump made a lot of tax promises. Can he keep them?

Although Trump claims that his plan to raise tariffs will replace the revenue lost to these tax breaks, experts say that’s not possible. President-elect Donald Trump's tax proposals could cost trillions of dollars. In addition to eliminating taxes on certain income, Trump also floated making interest paid on car loans fully tax deductible; getting rid of the controversial cap on state and local tax deductions; ending the double taxation on Americans who live abroad; exempting police officers, firefighters, veterans and active-duty military from federal income tax; and even exploring jettisoning the federal income tax itself. Though his campaign didn’t release details on the proposal, Trump indicated that he would eliminate both federal income taxes and payroll taxes, which fund Social Security and Medicare. Virtually all tipped workers would get some tax relief if Trump also gets rid of payroll taxes on tips, the Tax Policy Center found.

U.S. President Joe Biden meets with China's President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the APEC Summit in Lima, Peru, on Nov. 16, 2024. Biden was expected to urge Xi to dissuade North Korea from further deepening its support for Russia's war on Ukraine. In front of the cameras Saturday, Xi spoke to Biden — but it was unmistakable that his message was directed at Trump. After he was greeted by Xi, Biden ignored shouted questions from reporters on his concerns about the incoming Trump administration as well as North Korea. Biden is looking for Xi to step up Chinese engagement to prevent an already dangerous moment with North Korea from further escalating.

Tech companies that source a large part of their supplies from China could suffer under a second Trump term, according to Citi. Citi analyst Atif Malik shared a basket of stocks that have China manufacturing exposure and could therefore face ramifications going forward. While the company has a very high exposure to Chinese manufacturing, Malik said that Apple is currently making efforts to diversify its supply chain. "China is the main manufacturing location for Apple with more than 90% manufacturing in China, in our estimates," the analyst said. "Manufacturing is primarily conducted through contract manufacturers and original design manufacturers with manufacturing locations in China, Malaysia, Mexico, Taiwan, and Vietnam," he added.

Such a scenario would entail higher inflation, higher rates, and falling stock prices, Roubini predicted. "That's going to crowd economic growth, and bond yields above 5% would imply a correction of stock prices and negative impacts on the economy." AdvertisementOther experts have warned some of Trump's policies could lead to higher inflation and interest rates, with his tariff plan attracting significant criticism from economists. Some of Trump's policies — like his plans to loosen regulation — could prop up business activity and fuel growth, Roubini noted. "I think markets are still in a wait-and-see to figure out whether the policies are going to be hurting the economy," Roubini said.

In the 15 full weeks of data following Harris’ entry into the race, a slightly smaller share – about 71% on average – said they’d heard something about her. Sentiments expressed by political independents when talking about the news surrounding Trump were negative throughout the campaign. The dollar further unwound some of its sharp gains from earlier in the week as traders closed out profitable bets on a Trump presidency after his election victory. That helped lift sterling back toward the $1.30 mark, while the yen similarly got some respite and hovered closer to the 153 per dollar level. Sterling last traded $1.2983, recovering from its fall to a roughly three-month low earlier in the week. Trump's plan would reduce average after-tax incomes by almost 3%, according to the tax think tank. "If we get tariffs, we will pass those tariff costs back to the consumer," Daniele said in September. A back-of-the-envelope calculation suggests a 10% across-the-board tariff would be roughly equivalent to a $320 billion tax on consumers, Cross said. "The administration could take tariff revenue and redistribute to households via tax cuts in some form or another," explained Pugliese of Wells Fargo. However, the typical U.S. household would still lose $2,600 a year from Trump's tariff plan, even after accounting for an extension of the 2017 tax cuts, according to an analysis by the Peterson Institute for International Economics.
