The family of a 30-year-old Hawaii resident is searching for her in Los Angeles after she missed a connecting flight, sent unusual text messages and then went silent, the relatives said. The next day, she sent concerning text messages to loved ones, family members said. The three were part of a larger group of family members and loved ones who gathered in Los Angeles in recent days to launch a search effort. Family members said they couldn't speak about it in detail because they don't want to hinder investigators. The group gathered in Los Angeles is focusing its own search on the intersection of Pico Boulevard and Hill Street, near the Convention Center, LA Live and Crypto Arena, family members said.

HONG KONG — A Hong Kong court sentenced dozens of leading pro-democracy figures to up to 10 years prison Tuesday in the single largest trial under a national security law that critics say has been used to all but eliminate political dissent in the Chinese territory. Lawyers for the defendants have argued that such action was within the bounds of Hong Kong law. In March, Hong Kong’s opposition-free legislature also enacted local national security legislation. Among the 47 are “second-tier pan-democrats” who were previously active members of the Hong Kong legislature, Burns said. Hong Kong officials said last month that there was no time limit for prosecuting the cases, noting that it takes time to gather evidence.

Vice President Kamala Harris and President-elect Donald Trump barreled into election night with cautious optimism that their respective campaigns would prevail. The polling averages showed a tight race that could be decided by razor-thin margins in key battleground states like Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. But as the first waves of returns streamed in, Trump’s advantages in the swing states quickly became clear — elating Republicans and demoralizing Democrats. The United States remains as bitterly divided as ever. Here, through photography and illustration, we explore a divided nation’s reactions to winning, losing and the future.

However, a debt consolidation loan isn't a one-size-fits-all solution, says CFP Uziel Gomez. While I try to avoid carrying high-interest debt and aim to pay my credit card balance in full each month, as a financial coach, people often come to me feeling overwhelmed and wanting help with looming credit card debt. Sometimes, a debt consolidation loan can help, but it's not always the answer. If someone isn't ready for debt consolidation, Gomez recommends whittling away at your credit card payments using either the snowball or avalanche debt payoff method. You haven't established good habitsIf you haven't established good habits to keep your credit card spending to a minimum, it's probably best not to consider a credit card debt consolidation loan or balance transfer card.

HONG KONG — A key piece of a little-told chapter of World War II history almost ended up in a landfill. That diary is now believed to be the only known primary source documenting the involvement of Chinese naval officers in the D-Day landings at Normandy. The 24 British-trained Chinese naval officers were forced to choose between the two sides, with many of them going on to have distinguished careers in the Chinese or Taiwanese militaries. Instead he settled down in Hong Kong, a British colony at the time, where he worked as a merchant seaman until the late 1960s. All logging ended there in 1992; Alishan is now a national forest and one of the most scenic spots in Taiwan. For those who grew up in the area and recall the train, riding it up the mountains and into the trees is part of what makes the place special. “This railway is one of the reasons that brings me home,” said Peng Hsiao-chi, 68, a factory worker who spent her youth in the countryside near Chiayi. She and her husband awoke at 4 a.m. and drove two hours to be among the first to ride the restored railway. They were lucky, clinching last-minute tickets released on the departure day.

Hanoi, Vietnam AP —Vietnam elected Luong Cuong, a military general, as its new president on Monday, the fourth official to fill the largely ceremonial role in 18 months. The role of the general secretary is the most powerful position in Vietnam while the presidency is mostly ceremonial and involves meeting foreign dignitaries. Vietnam's Luong Cuong takes his oath as Vietnam's President during the autumn opening session at the National Assembly in Hanoi on October 21, 2024. When he became the new general secretary, he promised to maintain the anti-corruption fight. “The installation of Luong Cuong as president is yet another example of the expansion of Vietnam’s police state,” he said.

Earnings drove the stock market higher — can they do it again in the week ahead? But he acknowledged that timing is key because our portfolio discipline mandates that we consider lightening up our stock exposure in an overbought market. In fact, AMD was our worst-performing stock for the entire week, losing more than 7% following the prior week's 1.8% slide. Energy was the worst sector of the week for the market as oil prices sank. In the week ahead, housing numbers are the main draw on the economic front.
