☆ California Educator Is Charged With Molesting 8 Children

A Los Angeles assistant principal was arrested on Friday and charged with molesting eight children between 2015 and 2019, while he was working as an elementary school counselor in Ventura County. The defendant, David Lane Braff Jr., 42, of Thousand Oaks, Calif., is accused of molesting children aged 6 to 10 in an office at McKevett Elementary School in the Santa Paula Unified School District, roughly 70 miles west of Los Angeles. The charges emerged out of a cold case sexual abuse unit, Ventura County District Attorney Erik Nasarenko said. He noted that officials at McKevett Elementary had reached out to authorities at the time of the alleged incidents. Nevertheless, Mr. Braff has held several jobs in public education since and has also volunteered in a number of programs for children.

A California school district rejected the state's social studies curriculum over the inclusion of Harvey Milk. The school board voted in an emergency meeting to accept the curriculum on Friday. The Temecula Unified School District board called an emergency meeting on Friday night where it voted to adopt the curriculum, the local TV news station KCAT reported. Newsom said in a video statement that the state would purchase the social studies books that the school district rejected for the parents in the district. "If these extremist school board members won't do their job, we will — and fine them for their incompetence," Newsom said.

But technically, this was a strike to protest the school district’s labor practices, not over the state of the contract negotiations. Most of those short strikes started with both strikers and management knowing the length of the strike at the start. Los Angeles school workers and supporters rally in Los Angeles State Historic Park on the last day of a three-day strike this past week. Sometimes the union waging the strike doesn’t have the option, at least not at that time, to have an open-ended strike. Workers on strike sometimes receive strike benefits but they’re not eligible for unemployment benefits from their state.
