The wildfires wreaking devastation in the Los Angeles area could become the costliest blaze in U.S. history. The insured losses from this week’s fires may exceed $20 billion, according to estimates published by JPMorgan on Thursday. Five wildfires fueled by dry conditions and strong winds have burned through 29,000 acres of land around Los Angeles since Tuesday, according to Cal Fire. The estimated economic losses from the wildfires has more than doubled since Wednesday to nearly $50 billion, according to the investment bank. The economic losses could rise to $57 billion, according to estimates from AccuWeather.

Eight people were killed in southwest Texas on Wednesday morning when a driver suspected of human smuggling tried to elude law enforcement officers and slammed head-on into an S.U.V., the Texas Department of Public Safety said. The crash occurred just after 6:30 a.m. on US-57 near Batesville, some 80 miles southwest of San Antonio, the department said in a statement. A Michigan woman was arrested after she sent months of harassing text messages to two teenagers, including her daughter, officials said Thursday. From Sept. 13, 2021, to Feb. 20, Licari sent hundreds of "mean" text messages to her daughter and a boy she had been dating, Isabella County Sheriff Michael Main wrote in a report. "The messages are specific in nature indicating that they may be from someone who they know," according to the report.
