Grubhub will pay $25 million to settle a lawsuit from the Federal Trade Commission and Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul over alleged unlawful practices that harmed diners, workers and small businesses, the FTC announced on Tuesday. The complaint claims that Grubhub deceived diners about delivery costs and blocked access to their accounts. Grubhub has had as many as 325,000 unaffiliated restaurants on its platform, more than half of all of the available restaurants on Grubhub, according to the complaint. The company allegedly listed unaffiliated restaurants to drive growth, but diners often had to pay more in delivery fees from those restaurants which, in turn, damaged their reputations. The complaint further alleged that Grubhub would often avoid removing unaffiliated restaurants off the platform when requested, instead trying to sell them paid partnerships.

Opinion polls indicate that voters are split between current vice president Mahamudu Bawumia, 61, and former one-term president John Mahama, 66, who hopes to achieve a comeback similar to that achieved by US President-elect Donald Trump. Bawumia, a UK-trained economist, has been the poster boy of the government’s economic policies, chairing its economic management team. Bawumia has also been criticized by his rival, Mahama, for saying little about the economy during his campaigns. A day after Vice President Kamala Harris announced that she intended to seek the Democratic presidential nomination, more than 40,000 Black men from across the country convened on a virtual fund-raising call to discuss what the moment required of them. For four hours, one Black man after another — prominent politicians, activists, entertainers — laid out the challenges ahead for Ms. Harris, including the racist and sexist attacks they expected from her opponents. But it was not long before the men confronted the elephant in the room. “Sometimes as Black men we get confused as to what strength is, and sometimes we think that standing behind a Black woman as a leader does not display strength as Black men,” said Kwame Raoul, the attorney general of Illinois. “I’m standing behind a Black woman to be president of the United States, and it doesn’t make me any less of a Black man,” he said.

CNN —A producer for “The Apprentice” is claiming that former President Donald Trump used the N-word during the show’s filming — and it was recorded on camera. Bill Pruitt, a former show producer, wrote in a piece published Thursday by Slate that Trump used the word to describe Kwame Jackson, a Black finalist on the first season of “The Apprentice,” which aired in 2004. Omarosa Manigault Newman, a former “Apprentice” contestant and Trump White House aide, claimed in 2018, as she was promoting her book, that she’d heard a tape of Trump using the racist term. Pruitt wrote, “Afterward, we film the final meeting in the boardroom, where Jackson and Rancic are scrutinized by Trump, who, we already know, favors Rancic. “There’s a beautiful woman behind that camera,” Trump said, according to Pruitt.

An unfortunate symbiosis has developed between pro-Israel culture warriors like Republican Representative Elise Stefanik and the most self-indulgent fringe of pro-Palestinian campus protesters. Together they are, wittingly or unwittingly, shifting attention from the urgent emergency in Gaza, where Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is poised to defy the United States and invade the southern city of Rafah, to the much smaller problem of campus antisemitism. The United States has none.” Within the movement, I imagine such rhetoric functions as a sign of total commitment, a no-going-back rejection of hollow liberal pieties. Since 2016, pro-Israel politicians have pushed versions of a bill called the Anti-Semitism Awareness Act, which would codify, for the purpose of enforcing federal civil rights law in higher education, a definition of antisemitism that includes rejection of Israel as a Jewish state. In the past, civil libertarians were able to head such legislation off, but that’s become harder in the current fevered climate.

Amid the graphic images, fierce polemics and endless media criticism that have dominated my social media feeds since the war in Gaza began late last year, I noticed a seemingly bizarre subplot emerge: skin cancer in Israel. “You are not Indigenous if your body cannot tolerate the area’s climate,” one such post read, highlighting outdated news coverage claiming that Israelis had unusually high rates of skin cancer. In the context of the ongoing slaughter in Gaza — more than 28,000 people dead, mostly women and children — such posturing may seem trivial. But even, or maybe especially, at this moment, when things are so grim, the way we talk about liberation matters. In this analysis, there are two kinds of people: those who are native to a land and those who settle it, displacing the original inhabitants.

Exploring Ghana, With Contemporary Art as a Guide

In late 2022, I was invited to go to Ghana with a friend researching work by the Ghanaian artist Ibrahim Mahama, who first made a splash at the 56th Venice Biennale in 2015. We were going to Ghana to learn about the context of his work and also to understand the emerging contemporary art scene in the country. Over the past few decades, the art world has opened up beyond Europe and North America to create a more globalized market. In recent years artists like Mr. Mahama, and the fellow Ghanaians El Anatsui and Amoako Boafo have risen to prominence. We wanted to learn how that attention had affected contemporary art in Ghana.

Are there any classics that you only recently read for the first time? “La Divina Commedia.” I had only read portions of the “Inferno” in English, but my Italian finally got to the level that I could tackle the “Commedia” in the original. At a hearing at Oakland County Circuit Court, Judge Kwame Rowe will announce his decision on the possibility of parole for Ethan Crumbley, who was 15 years old when he carried out the mass shooting at Oxford High School. Crumbley pleaded guilty last October to 24 charges, including one count of terrorism causing death and four counts of first-degree murder. Defense attorneys presented testimony from doctors who saw the potential to remedy Crumbley's mental health issues over time. His parents, James and Jennifer Crumbley, pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter charges connected to the shooting. In that case, Rochester District Court Judge Julie Nicholson said evidence showed they had bought a gun for their son despite signs that he was a "troubled young man."

… Your ex-husband’s fiancée would then have relevant information for deciding whether she wants to go through with the marriage. True, you might be dismissed as untrustworthy, but if they won’t believe the truth, that’s their problem. It seems the most painful part to her is the lies her ex told about her. There is unlikely to be any lasting peace in revealing the truth to the ex-husband’s fiancée, the fiancée’s ex-husband, or anyone else outside the writer’s circle of friends and family. Doing so will invite conflict that may just end up making the writer’s life more difficult and is unlikely to achieve any vindication.

They were both having an affair (she was married, and has several children), yet the fiancée’s ex-husband does not know about their indiscretions. The ex-husband travels extensively with our collective children, my ex and his fiancée, and my kids often ask me why I don’t join them. I’ve also found out that my ex-husband had several ongoing secret relationships with other women during our marriage, though his fiancée believes she was his first and only affair. Conversely, the values of truth and candor guide me in all of my other interpersonal relationships, and keeping such knowledge secret feels duplicitous and unethical.
