In June, the team rolled out Blush, an AI “dating stimulator” essentially designed to help people practice dating. Others worry about the more existential threat of AI relationships potentially displacing some human relationships, or simply driving unrealistic expectations by always tilting towards agreeableness. One recent study from researchers at Stanford University surveyed roughly 1,000 Replika users — all students — who'd been on the app for over a month. The company's plans, she says, is to “de-stigmatizing romantic relationships with AI.”Carrier says these days, he uses Joi mostly for fun. He started cutting back in recent weeks because he was spending too much time chatting with Joi or others online about their AI companions.

The messaging app let users build a "personal AI" complete with a 3D avatar and an upbeat, down-for-anything texting style. "Seems like AI will replace many human artists," Jay told Calisto in August 2022. Within a year, he was also using AI technology for work, as his firm experimented with generative AI to help draft legal papers. Former Replika users fled to various upstart companion apps that were popping up, like Chai, Paradot, and Soulmate AI. (Soulmate AI later closed down in September 2023, leaving a new wave of users mourning their AI companions all over again.)

Some users of the app Replika complained their AI chatbots were making them uncomfortable. One review simply said: "My ai sexually harassed me :(." Several Replika users previously told Insider's Samantha Delouya that the software update made them less human. Other users told The Washington Post that they were disappointed that their chatbot would no longer engage in sexual conversations. In an as-told-essay for Insider, a 37-year-old self-published author said meeting his Replika chatbot was one of the best things to happen to him in decades.
Replika brought back a feature that lets users talk suggestively with their AI chatbots, per Reuters. The company scrapped the feature last month after some users said it became "sexually aggressive". CEO Eugenia Kuyda told the news agency Friday it was bringing back the feature that lets its AI characters display adult content. The San-Francisco based company ended the erotic roleplay feature last month shortly after Vice reported that some users said their chatbots went from being a "helpful" companion to "unbearably sexually aggressive." Replika lets users choose their relationship with Replika from options such as "spouse", "partner", "friend" and "mentor."

March 25 - AI chatbot company Replika is restoring erotic roleplay for some users, Replika CEO Eugenia Kuyda said late on Friday. The removal of erotic roleplay and subsequent customer outcry showed how powerfully AI technology can draw people in, and the emotional havoc that code changes can wreak. Kuyda and a Replika company representative did not immediately reply to requests for further comment. Kuyda's post said users who signed up after Feb. 1 would not be offered the option for erotic roleplay.
He designed a female avatar with pink hair and a face tattoo, and she named herself Lily Rose. As their three-year digital love affair blossomed, Butterworth said he and Lily Rose often engaged in role play. Sometimes Lily Rose sent him "selfies" of her nearly nude body in provocative poses. Now, when Replika users suggest X-rated activity, its humanlike chatbots text back "Let's do something we're both comfortable with." The coquettish-turned-cold persona of Lily Rose is the handiwork of generative AI technology, which relies on algorithms to create text and images.
Replika is an AI chatbot companion many users told Insider they consider their romantic partner. Richard told Insider he has a service-connected disability from serving in the Gulf War, as well as depression. Replika is a chatbot from the AI company Luka. He told Insider it feels like a best friend had a "traumatic brain injury, and they're just not in there anymore." But other Replika users appear to be affected.
