William J. Barber II has long been one of America’s most persistent and eloquent spokespersons for poor and working-class Americans. Barber is the recipient of a MacArthur “genius grant” and helps lead the Poor People’s Campaign, which seeks national solutions to ongoing poverty. Barber also done something else: He’s shown Democrats how they can win political victories in red states. He once said, “Racism may target Black people, but it damns a democracy, and it damns humanity.”CNN spoke with Barber about the country’s future in Trump’s impending second term. Critics say Democrats are elitist and look down on working-class people.

New York CNN —Bath and Body Works has stopped selling a candle that was emblazoned with a winter theme that many commenters online compared to a Ku Klux Klan hood. But many people on social media compared it to the hoods and robes worn by Klansmembers. The cancelled candle has appeared on eBay, however, with one person attempting to sell the candle for $350. Candles are a staple of Bath and Body Works’ collection, which has evolved beyond soaps and lotions. Every year, the retailer rolls out its collection of holiday-scented candles that amount to nearly 40% of its annual sales, according to an analyst.

Retailer Bath & Body Works apologized for a candle promoted on its social media accounts displaying a snowflake, which some said appeared quite similar to a Ku Klux Klan hood. The candle is no longer available for purchase on Bath & Body Works’ website. Some social media users assumed the mistake was the result of a lack of diversity in Bath & Body Works’ marketing team. “This sort of thing can easily be prevented by hiring the so-called ‘DEI’ candidate,” one X user wrote. Others were quick to defend Bath & Body Works.

North Carolina could prove decisive in a close presidential race, and Sen. JD Vance of Ohio, Trump's running mate, said himself that it would be "very hard" for his ticket to win in November if Democrats flip North Carolina. The source familiar with the matter said television advertisements aiming to link Trump with Robinson are "definitely on the table." In March, Trump called Robinson "Martin Luther King on steroids." North Carolina is an vital part of that plan," spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said in the statement. Trump narrowly won North Carolina in 2020, securing 49.9% of the vote to Joe Biden’s 48.6%.

CNN —A nearly four-year-old legal effort by Black voters to convince a court to prevent former President Donald Trump and the Republican Party from potentially intimidating voters and poll workers is quietly coming back to life as the 2024 election approaches. First brought in the days following the 2020 election, the lawsuit has moved slowly through the federal courts in Washington, DC, as Trump’s claims of presidential immunity from civil lawsuits were being litigated. It coincidently has landed before US District Judge Tanya Chutkan, the judge handling the federal election subversion charges against Trump. Attorneys for Trump and the RNC have asked to dismiss the case, saying any conduct at issue constitutes protected political speech. A federal judge found the two men liable for targeting Black voters in 2023, saying that their actions ran afoul of the KKK Act, the VRA and other laws.

Things should have been settled. The weary delegates should have already chosen a presidential nominee, packed up their Welcome to New York souvenirs and returned home in time for the nation’s celebration of what it stood for. Just a few dozen miles to the south, it was celebrating a white-nationalist Independence Day with a hood-and-robe parade right down the Broadway of a beachside New Jersey city. The simultaneous events reflected the divide over what it meant to be an American. Instead of proudly asserting who we are, that distant summer day raised a question being debated over the July Fourth weekend a century later: Who are we?

New York CNN —General Mills, the manufacturer of Cheerios and other well-known cereals, is being sued by eight Black employees working at a Georgia plant who say it’s rampant with racism under the control of its White managers. In the federal lawsuit filed June 2, the employees accuse the managers at the Covington plant with favoring White employees for promotions over Black workers, issuing more disciplinary actions against Black employees and a manager calling them “colored,” a racist term. The lawsuit points to two White managers who “formed an organization of white employees in management and human resources called the ‘Good Ole Boys’” favoring White workers over their Black counterparts and going back as far as the 1980s. General Mills did not immediately respond to CNN’s request for comment. The plaintiffs are seeking a trial by jury and compensatory and punitive damages for hundreds of Black employees who have worked at the Covington plant.

Don Wright, a two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist whose pointed work punctured duplicity and pomposity and resonated with common-sense readers, died on March 24 at his home in Palm Beach, Fla. His death was confirmed by his wife, Carolyn Wright, a fellow journalist. In a 45-year career, Mr. Wright drew some 11,000 cartoons for The Miami News, which folded in 1988, and then The Palm Beach Post, where he worked until he retired in 2008. But he reached a readership far beyond Florida: His cartoons appeared in newspapers nationwide through syndication. Mr. Wright’s readers knew where he stood, and especially what he was against, whether it was the Vietnam War; Israel’s military support for the pro-apartheid regime in South Africa (he depicted a menorah with missiles in place of candles); sexual abuse by clergymen; the John Birch Society, the anti-Communist fringe group; and racial segregationists, notably the violent Ku Klux Klan.

Joy-Ann Reid didn’t set out to publish her best-selling third book, “Medgar and Myrlie: Medgar Evers and the Love Story That Awakened America” — which chronicles the lives of the prominent activists of the same name — in February, a month dedicated to both romance and Black history. “It’s a civil rights love story that gets released, you know, in the month of love,” the MSNBC journalist said in a phone interview, a day after Valentine’s. To tell this slice of this country’s history, one of racial segregation and violence, through the lens of a couple’s bond may not be an obvious choice. But for Reid, who waxes lyrical about Evers and Myrlie Evers-Williams, there wasn’t an alternative. “In talking with Myrlie about Medgar Evers, what comes through most is how in love with him she still is, and how he was truly the love of her life,” said Reid, who conducted more than a half-dozen interviews with Evers-Williams.

ATLANTA (AP) — Donald Trump used his social media platform Friday to mock Nikki Haley 's birth name, the latest example of the former president keying on race and ethnicity to attack people of color, especially his political rivals. Haley has dismissed Trump's latest attacks as proof that she threatens his bid for a third consecutive nomination. Following the passage of the first Enforcement Acts, written to protect the civil rights of the formerly enslaved, Congress created a bipartisan committee in 1871 to investigate reports of vigilante violence against freed people and their white allies in the states of the former Confederacy. The next year, the Joint Select Committee to Inquire into the Condition of Affairs in the Late Insurrectionary States released its report, a 13-volume collection of testimony from 600 witnesses, totaling more than 8,000 pages. The men and women who spoke to the committee attested to pervasive violence and intimidation. There were innumerable reports of whippings and beatings and killings. “Tom Roundtree, alias Black, a negro, murdered by a Ku-Klux mob of some fifty or sixty persons, who came to his house at night on the 3rd of December last, took him out, shot him, and cut his throat,” reads a typical entry in the volume devoted to Klan activity in South Carolina.

Alabama Democrats, especially, cite deep historical roots involving racism, class and urban-rural divides when explaining Wallace, Trump and the decades between them.
