CNN —A German citizen has been sentenced to death in Belarus after being charged with terrorism and mercenary activities, according to a Belarusian human rights group. The group Human Rights Center “Viasna” said the German national is a 29-year-old German Red Cross employee named Rico Krieger. According to his LinkedIn profile, he worked as an emergency medical technician for the German Red Cross and as an armed security officer for the US Embassy in Berlin. The German Red Cross (DRK) told CNN’s German affiliate N-TV that while “the man in question,” without naming Krieger, had previously worked for them, his stay abroad was not related to his work with the DRK. CNN has also reached out to the German Red Cross for comment.

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — An American man convicted of sexual offences in Kenya nine years ago was denied bail on new charges of defilement, months after he was mysteriously released from prison where he was serving a 50-year sentence. He faces additional charges of being in Kenya illegally. Senior Principal Magistrate Barbra Ojoo denied Krieger bail after prosecutors argued successfully that he was a repeat offender and a flight risk. He was released in November 2022 under unclear circumstances after only serving eight years of his sentence. Krieger, from Michigan, was convicted in the United States in 1992 for sexual conduct with a minor and served three years in jail before his release in in 1995.

Hundreds of individuals were accused of witchcraft in what would become the Commonwealth of Massachusetts between 1638 and 1693. Another accused Boston witch, known as Goodwife Ann Glover or Goody Glover, was hanged in the city in 1688. Jane Swift signed a bill exonerating five women executed during the witch trials in Salem. It’s true that the Ukrainian counteroffensive debuted with conspicuous setbacks and hasn’t advanced as much as hoped. Moreover, land seized by Russia earlier has been used to strike ever deeper into Ukraine, making restoring defensible borders an existential concern. But Kyiv got the ammunition needed to sustain the counteroffensive longer while awaiting expanded factory production of conventional shells in 2024. Putin miscalculated disastrously when he invaded in Ukraine, so he’s now hoping to outlast Western support for Ukraine to rescue what spoils he can. But failing to do so now could entail the US, Europe and Ukraine paying a much higher price later.

That should be no surprise considering that a consistent proponent of this inquiry was former President Donald Trump. I make that judgment based on my work as a scholar of impeachment and also as a practitioner who helped lead the first Trump impeachment and trial as counsel to the House Judiciary Committee. McCarthy bitterly — and now hypocritically — criticized former Speaker Nancy Pelosi for announcing the first Trump impeachment before a vote (she later scheduled one). That includes examples like the inquiry into President Richard Nixon and the second Trump impeachment. The proposed Biden impeachment is a revenge mission and nothing more.
