A kulhad is a biodegradable, disposable clay cup used in India by food vendors to serve hot beverages like chai and some desserts like yogurt. The cups have been excavated from the Indus Valley as far back as the end of the Stone Age, 5,000 years ago. Lately, synthetic materials like plastic and paper have started replacing these clay cups, as they are cheaper and more convenient for vendors to acquire. But the clay cups still persist in India. We went inside a kulhad workshop outside Kolkata to see how the traditional clay cup business is still standing.

The Indian Medical Association, the largest association of modern medicine doctors in India, has called for the suspension of non-emergency medical services for 24 hours across the country after a female trainee doctor was raped and murdered last week at a hospital. Reuters reported that the 31-year-old victim was killed inside the medical college where she worked, and was found dead last Friday. Police said she had been raped and a police volunteer was later arrested in connection with the crime.

India’s half-hour zone dates back to colonial rule of India and the era when ever-faster steamships and trains were shrinking the world. The start of the 20th century saw some push from scientific associations to calibrate India’s time to GMT. That recommendation was rejected by the colonial government, which opted for a unified time that sat squarely in the middle: five and a half hours ahead of GMT. In 2015, North Korea moved out of sync with South Korea by creating “Pyongyang Time,” putting the country eight and a half hours ahead of GMT instead of nine. India’s colonial-era time zone decision making, however, reflected a chorus of political, scientific and commercial voices both from within the government and outside of it, Gordon says.
