New York CNN —President-elect Donald Trump’s quest to buy Greenland from Denmark could make Ozempic and Wegovy, the weight-loss and diabetes drugs exploding in popularity, even more expensive for Americans. That figure is likely even higher for 2024 because Novo Nordisk, the Danish pharmaceutical giant, makes one of the hottest drugs on the market: Ozempic. “Novo Nordisk retains a sizable monopoly power on the market,” said Jacob Funk Kirkegaard, senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics. Charlotte de la Fuente/Bloomberg/Getty ImagesIt’s also gotten the attention of officials at Novo Nordisk. However, Novo Nordisk has facilities that fill the containers and package them around the world, including in the United States.

On Sunday, Trump told NBC's "Meet the Press" that Ukraine will "possibly" receive less military aid once he takes office. Aid to UkraineUkraine relies on military and financial aid from international partners to sustain its military campaign, especially the U.S. and Europe. Both Europe and the U.S. have provided "a comparable amount of military aid," Pietro Bomprezzi, the project lead of the Ukraine Support Tracker, told CNBC. In 2005, the sheriff’s office renewed efforts to solve the crime by uploading the DNA sample to the FBI’s national genetic database, CODIS. The first breakthrough came in 2022, after the sheriff’s office received a grant from the state attorney general’s office. With this funding, they sent the DNA sample to Parabons NanoLab in Virginia for genetic genealogy testing. Twenty-six years after Tracy’s death, the sheriff’s office used lab data to identify John Guillot Jr. as her killer. Parabon NanoLabs tested the DNA sample and traced the suspect’s family lines to the 1700s.

Sweden’s economy has, in many ways, suffered from the same tribulations as the rest of Europe: recent bouts of crushing inflation and recession, and now the prospect of meager growth in a world split by geopolitical and economic conflict. Nevertheless, this tiny Nordic country has a roster of high-tech entrepreneurs that is the envy of its neighbors. Klarna, a financial tech firm, and King Digital Entertainment, the maker of the video game juggernaut Candy Crush, are other examples of homegrown tech powerhouses. “They have something — particularly in the tech sector — which other European countries do not really have to the same extent,” said Jacob Kirkegaard, a senior fellow at the German Marshall Fund. That entrepreneurial track record has been attracting renewed attention at a time when anxieties are mounting about Europe’s ability to compete with American and Chinese advancements in high technology.

In June, the financial services company WalletHub ranked the 50 states and DC across three categories: economic activity, economic health, and innovation potential. The Economic Policy Institute pointed to low minimum wages and unionization rates in Southern states as two factors keeping pay down. Of course, workers in some Southern states earn less than others. Using US Bureau of Economic Analysis and Bureau of Labor Statistics data, the analysis highlighted the average annual wages across US states as of 2022. Only two Southern states — Louisiana and West Virginia — were among the eight US states that saw their populations decline between 2022 and 2023.

This culminated with the Ukrainian leader, Volodomyr Zelenskyy, saying Tuesday that the absence of a timeline for his country to join NATO was "absurd." Even if some members were very keen to follow Ukraine's request, the United States in particular isn't supportive of immediate membership for Kyiv at this time. But I promise you, the United States is doing everything we can to get you what you need as rapidly as we can get it to you." watch nowThe 31 members of NATO did not commit to a date for when Ukraine can join the group. However, Valtonen disregarded claims that Ukraine has not shown gratitude, arguing that aid should not be seen as charity.

European officials are looking at ways to use Russian assets to repay for the reconstruction of Ukraine. The European Union is getting closer to brokering a detailed plan on how to use frozen Russian assets to pay for the reconstruction of Ukraine, a senior official told CNBC. The EU has confirmed that there are more than 200 billion euros ($215.5 billion) and a separate 20 billion euros ($21.5 billion) in assets across the bloc that belong to the Russian central bank and to Russian private individuals, respectively. These assets were frozen by European authorities in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine to sanction the Kremlin for its aggression. She added at the time that these funds should also be put toward the reconstruction efforts, once the war is over and sanctions are lifted off the frozen assets.

A member of the Peoples Armed Police stands guard in front of the flag of the European Union at the European Delegation in Beijing, China. As the United States looks at disengaging from China, Europe could soon find itself in a sweet spot. "The U.S.' hawkish policy stance towards China means that China needs to improve relations with Europe to mitigate the impact of export controls. Therefore, China has an incentive to work hard on improving EU relations," Anna Rosenberg, head of geopolitics at the Amundi Institute, told CNBC via email. "Viewed from China, the EU is the most important high-income market that it still has largely unfettered access to.
President Joe Biden will host Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and other congressional leaders at the White House on Tuesday for a critical meeting on raising the US debt ceiling. The closest analogue to the US debt ceiling is the set-up in Denmark. Lawmakers did not want the debt ceiling to become a proxy for difficult conversations about the government’s fiscal plans. That makes it less likely the debt ceiling could be turned into a political football. Even so, it’s clear that in Denmark, the debt limit has enabled the smooth functioning of government, Kirkegaard said.
G-7 nations have so far decided not to revise their cap on Russian oil. She called for policymakers to lower the level of the price cap to continue to pressure the Kremlin's finances. Is the price cap working? Ultimately, Kirkegaard said there was no explicit way to determine whether the oil cap is effective or not. India, China snap up Russian oil
Officials have denied problems in the Franco-German relationship, but Chancellor Scholz's focus on domestic politics is upsetting some lawmakers in Europe. Fresh tensions between France and Germany are challenging their relationship at a time when their unity is critical for broader European policy in tackling the energy crisis. The leaders of the two nations will meet in Paris on Wednesday, but this encounter almost got canceled. He added that the action of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is "creating the deepest divides within the Union." France and Germany are the two largest economies in the European Union and two of the founding nations of this political grouping.
German company Wasser 3.0, however, thinks it may have found the answer to cleaning up microplastic pollution before it reaches the ocean — using a whirlpool and a specially developed hybrid silica gel. Courtesy Wasser 3.0 gGmbH | Philipp BrüderleThe hybrid silica gel consists of silicone-based chemicals called organosilanes, and is non-toxic, says Schuhen. During a 12-month trial at the Landau site, around 600 pounds of microplastics were removed, says Schuhen. Some scientists have suggested using magnetic fluids to separate microplastics from water or sticky film made of bacteria, but these processes are in their early stages. Schuhen says that Wasser 3.0 is an affordable, scalable and simple solution to the global problem of microplastic pollution.
British Prime Minister Liz Truss and Chancellor of the Exchequer Kwasi Kwarteng visit Berkeley Modular, in Northfleet, Kent, Britain, September 23, 2022. The pound crashed below $1.09 for the first time since 1985 and British government bonds suffered the biggest daily fall in decades. "I've rarely seen an economic policy that is as uniformly panned by economic experts and financial markets," said Harvard professor Jason Furman, former chair of the U.S. Council of Economic Advisers during Barack Obama's presidency. Britain's Institute for Fiscal Studies compared Kwarteng's statement to a budget in 1972 that similarly sought to double Britain's rate of economic growth, but is widely remembered as a disaster for its inflationary effect. Furman said Truss might also have no choice but to undo some of her plans if Britain's debt problems start to spiral because of higher interest rates.
