Texas is the highest-ranked SEC team in the College Football Playoff at No. But the SEC team that no one wants to play right now is one that isn’t even in the top 10. Advertisement“If you ask me right now which team I’d least want to face, it’s Ole Miss,” said an SEC defensive coordinator of a Top 25 team. Ole Miss has 23 more TFLs than anyone else in the SEC (103) and 18 more than anyone else in the country. A big piece of that impact is due to the commitment Ole Miss made this offseason to upgrading its talent in the trenches through the portal.

1 Texas Longhorns 30-15 in Austin on Saturday evening as Bulldogs running back Trevor Etienne ran for three touchdowns in a game marred by Texas fans throwing trash on the field. Texas fans expressed their frustration with the call by throwing water bottles and other trash onto the field at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, which were cleared up by cheerleaders and other team staff. Fans threw trash onto the field during the game. Bulldogs running back Trevor Etienne ran for three touchdowns during the game. “Unfortunately we didn’t play our best football tonight but we were still competitive,” Texas coach Steve Sarkisian told reporters afterward.

As the garbage came down, Texas coach Steve Sarkisian and then other members of the Texas team walked to the corner of the end zone waving their hands and asking students to stop. They were unable to go sideline-to-sideline or downhill as Georgia met Texas with force every step of the way. The second half got dicey, with Georgia giving up two touchdowns on relatively short fields, one after the controversial interception/overturned pass interference, the other after Georgia for some reason squib-kicked the second half kickoff. In the second half, Ewers returned and led a touchdown drive to open the third quarter. Mykel Williams forced a second Ewers fumble with 10:23 left in the game, thwarting a Texas drive in Georgia territory.

That changed in 2023, when Texas went 12-2 in coach Steve Sarkisian’s third season and appeared in the College Football Playoff for the first time. Like Texas, Georgia spent much of the last 30 years boasting a past national championship and a campus in a recruiting-rich part of the country, with little modern success to show for it. The quarterback of the Bulldogs’ back-to-back championship teams was not a former high-star recruit but he did grow up in Georgia. In the decade before Sarkisian’s hiring, Texas recruiting classes finished with an average rank of 10.8 in the country; in three recruiting classes under Sarkisian, Texas has averaged a ranking of 4.6. In the eyes of Texas fans, the Longhorns won’t qualify as fully back until they win the program’s first football national championship since 2006.

2 Georgia to fourth-ranked Alabama might have acted as a de facto knockout game. The College Football Playoff’s expansion to 12 teams this season has left more margin for error for teams with national title ambitions that play in the sport’s four most powerful conferences. But that doesn’t mean the stakes are necessarily lower for Saturday’s meeting of undefeated Southeastern Conference rivals (7:30 p.m. But Georgia also has imperfections, such as its 74th-ranked third-down conversion rate, its 81st-ranked third-down defense and its numerous penalties. Dating to 2008, Alabama has won eight of the last nine games against Georgia.

Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe didn’t throw an incompletion until there were just under four minutes left in the second quarter. To this point it’s been Georgia, Texas, Ohio State and everyone else. Backs against the wall, Alabama turned to Milroe and Ryan Williams, whose immediate answer will go down as a legendary moment. It ended with a Beck interception, and turnovers were part of the reason Georgia had to put together an epic comeback. That list consists of Alabama, Texas and Tennessee.

Georgia is favored over Alabama for the fourth straight time Saturday, but another loss would be three losses in those four games. A loss would turn the conversation from “Kirby Smart had a Nick Saban problem” to “Georgia has an Alabama problem.”Alabama beat Georgia in the SEC Championship Game and earned a spot in the College Football Playoff. It certainly was in last year’s SEC Championship Game and likely will be again this weekend. But an Alabama win would elevate his status early in his tenure, so in that regard, there’s a lot to gain. Win or lose, both Georgia and Alabama will come away with things they need to work on.

Carson Beck and Jalen Milroe had to replace big-name quarterbacks at programs with national title-or-bust expectations. His turning point may have come in the SEC opener against South Carolina, when Beck rallied Georgia from a 14-3 halftime deficit to win 24-14. And Milroe has done something even Young couldn't do last season: lead the Tide to the SEC title game. Then Milroe was back, leading the Tide to a perfect SEC season and making their biggest play in the Iron Bowl. Alabama's national championship hopes came down to fourth-and-31 with a loss and some less dramatic close calls along the way. 1 and had a much less treacherous path to the Southeastern Conference Championship Game meeting of powerhouses Saturday in Atlanta despite some key injuries. LOS ANGELES—Nick Saban has 10 fingers and seven national championship rings. Georgia vanquished the Tide to break a 41-year national title drought last season, avenging its only regular-season loss in the process. They were within a victory of the program’s first national title since 1938.
Sen. Ted Cruz entered Monday night ecstatic about the TCU Horned Frogs' chances. #frogsby90," Cruz wrote on Twitter before the game. Led by Quarterback Stetson Bennett, a former walk-on player, Georgia stomped TCU 65-7. According to ESPN Stats and Info, the win is the largest margin of victory in a bowl game in college football history. Georgia enters next year with another chance at history: becoming the first team of the polling era to win three straight national titles.
