CNN —Some of the world’s best track and field athletes competed for lucrative prizes on Thursday, as the inaugural women-only Athlos event got underway in New York. The prize money is twice what athletes currently win at the Diamond League finale, according to Reuters. And I said, ‘Great, I’m going to double it for one single race,’” Ohanian previously told Reuters. Earlier this month, the Diamond League announced it would increase its prize money for the 2025 season. The total prize money per discipline will now be between $30,000 and $50,000 at regular meetings and between $60,000 and $100,000 for the season-finale.

The Real Power of Super Shoes Could Be Supercharged Training

One month before the year’s biggest track and field event, a dizzying number of fleet-footed performances have lit up local and professional meets. In the spring, the University of Washington track team produced eight sub-four-minute milers. On Friday night, Kipyegon set yet another record, smashing the women’s one-mile world record by almost five seconds when she broke the tape in 4 minutes 7.64 seconds. The performance stunned track fans accustomed to records that often improve by mere tenths of a second. So do the ever-evolving breeds of super shoes — those thick, springy kicks with a midsole plate that have revolutionized racing in recent years by giving higher rebound energy when a runner pushes off.

Jakob Ingebrigtsen was ready to become a Pac-Man when he stepped on the track in early June. (The distance is not considered world-record eligible because it is not an official World Athletics distance.) Incredibly, it was one of three records set on that balmy summer evening at the Paris Diamond League meet. Faith Kipyegon of Kenya set a world record in the 5,000 meters just a week after setting the 1,500-meter world record, and Lamecha Girma of Ethiopia broke the world record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. A week after breaking the women’s 1,500m world record, Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon put her name in the record books again, this time setting a world record in the women’s 5,000m at the Diamond League meet at Stade Charlety. “I didn’t think about the world record, I don’t know how I made it,” Kipyegon, who fell onto the track after the race, exhausted and emotional, said, per World Athletics. When I saw that it was a world record, I was so surprised – I just wanted to improve on my PB, the world record was not my plan. “The world record is not a surprise. World and Olympic champion Ingebrigtsen set a world best 7:54.10, telling reporters afterwards: “Being able to break this mark feels amazing.”“It is my first world best outdoors.

"I did not think about the world record. "... when I saw that it was a world record I was so surprised. I just wanted to improve on my personal best, the world record was not my plan." Earlier on Friday, Norway's Jakob Ingebrigtsen smashed the 26-year-old world mark in the two mile race. The 29-year-old produced a stunning performance to crush the world 5,000 mark at the Paris Diamond League on Friday, beating world record-holder Letesenbet Gidey of Ethiopia in the process. Posting on Instagram before Friday's meet at Charlety Stadium that she hoped to run a "beautiful race," Kipyegon definitely met that goal and more. "I just wanted to improve on my (personal best), the world record was not my plan. It has been an amazing week for Kipyegon, who is the first Kenyan woman to hold the 5,000 record. At the Florence Diamond League meeting last Friday Kipyegon set a world record when she ran 3:49.11 to break the 1,500 mark of 3:50.07 set by Genzebe Dibaba of Ethiopia in 2015.

Nearly nine months after missing out on the 1,500 metres world record by three-hundredths of a second, Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon buried the ghost of past disappointments with an emphatic performance at Friday’s Florence Diamond League meeting. Kipyegon’s narrow miss left her dejected, with the 29-year-old telling Olympics.com, “… after the finish line, I thought I got the world record. “When I crossed the finish line, I knew I broke the world record because I had a good finish and felt very strong at the end. The world record completes Kipyegon’s collection of achievements, adding to her two Olympic 1,500m golds and the 2017 and 2022 world titles, Commonwealth Games gold medal from 2014 and three Diamond League titles. “Getting this, it will really motivate me and I left the legacy for the next generation – they can say she broke the world record, she was the Olympic and the world champion.
