CNN —Kash Patel, Donald Trump’s pick to lead the FBI and an ardent supporter of the president-elect, has vowed to help dismantle the same organization he’s poised to lead. The FBI director must also be confirmed by the Senate, where members are already bracing for how they’ll navigate a slew of unorthodox Trump selections. As of late last week, some close to Trump believed it was a “toss-up” between Patel and Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey as to whom the president-elect would pick for FBI director, according to a source familiar with the discussions. Trump briefly floated Patel as a potential replacement for then-CIA Director Gina Haspel, whom he had considered firing after the 2020 election. Patel was also put in charge of the Pentagon transition effort for Trump’s first term, overseeing coordination with the incoming Biden-Harris administration.

President-elect Donald Trump announced Saturday he would pick Kash Patel, the former chief of staff to to the acting secretary of defense during the first Trump administration, to serve as director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. "Kash is a brilliant lawyer, investigator, and “America First” fighter who has spent his career exposing corruption, defending Justice, and protecting the American People," Trump wrote in a post to Truth Social, arguing Patel would "bring back Fidelity, Bravery, and Integrity to the FBI." Patel has earned a reputation as the ultimate Trump loyalist who has called for a purge of perceived enemies in the Justice Department and intelligence agencies. During the closing months of Trump’s tenure, the former president proposed Patel to serve as the deputy CIA director or to take over the FBI. He accused Patel of being a Washington bureaucrat who would interfere in a case where he was not needed.

Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner on Monday testified that Tesla CEO Elon Musk and his political action committee know they are conducting an "illegal" lottery by giving away $1 million to registered voters in Pennsylvania and other swing states before Election Day. "They know what they're doing is illegal and they are doing everything under the sun to clean it up," Krasner said. "There is no First Amendment right to commit crimes," the DA testified in the Philadelphia County Court of Common Pleas. "There is no First Amendment right to commit fraud." So far, the Biden team has been more sure-footed attacking Donald Trump’s threat to democracy than it has been defending Biden’s incumbency. To start with, who are the Republican voters that Trump will have the most trouble getting to the polls in November? In South Carolina, it was 36% of voters in the Republican primary (and Trump won 18% of them). In New Hampshire, it was 46% (and Trump won 22% of them). As of Monday, March 4, 2024, Section 3 of the 14th Amendment of the Constitution is essentially a dead letter, at least as it applies to candidates for federal office. In the aftermath of the oral argument last month, legal observers knew with near-certainty that the Supreme Court was unlikely to apply Section 3 to Trump. None of the justices seemed willing to uphold the Colorado court’s ruling, and only Justice Sonia Sotomayor gave any meaningful indication that she might dissent. Or the court could have held that Trump, as president, was not an “officer of the United States” within the meaning of the section. It’s worth noting that, by not taking this path, the court did not exonerate Trump from participating in an insurrection.

President Joe Biden has won the South Carolina Democratic primary, NBC News projects. Running against Biden were House Rep. Dean Phillips, D-Minn., and self-help author and 2020 Democratic candidate Marianne Williamson. NBC News' Decision Desk projects that Biden will be awarded all 55 Democratic delegates in South Carolina. South Carolina holds open primaries, which means any voter registered in the state is permitted to vote in either party's primary. President Biden won the South Carolina primary on Saturday, giving him the kind of emphatic result he no doubt envisioned when he made the state the first contest on the Democrats’ presidential nominating calendar. The election, called by The Associated Press shortly after polls closed, gives Mr. Biden the first set of delegates required to claim the Democratic nomination at the party’s convention in August. Mr. Biden vowed that South Carolina would once again send him to the White House. “The people of South Carolina have spoken again, and I have no doubt that you have set us on the path to winning the presidency again — and making Donald Trump a loser again,” the president said in a statement released by his campaign. Mr. Biden won an overwhelming majority of South Carolina Democrats, more than 96 percent with 80 percent of the vote counted — dominating every county with more than 95 percent of the vote, including in heavily Black areas.

On two separate occasions, Littlejohn provided tax documents belonging to Trump, Jeff Bezos, and Elon Musk to two news organizations. Trump's tax returns showed the former president paid just $750 in federal income taxes in 2016 and 2017. Musk's tax returns showed he paid $455 million in taxes on $1.52 billion in income between 2014 and 2018.
