Businesswoman and philanthropist Michele Kang just made a historic donation to women’s soccer. Kang, owner of the professional soccer team Washington Spirit, has pledged $30 million to the girls and women’s programs of U.S. Soccer, the organization announced on Tuesday. It’s the largest donation ever made to the soccer body by a woman, as well as to girls and women’s soccer. “Michele Kang’s gift will transform soccer for women and girls in the United States,” said Cindy Parlow Cone, president of the U.S. Soccer. The recall last week of two Bay Area officials who both championed progressive crime policies reflects long-held frustrations around a previous increase in violence targeting the Asian American community, experts say. The vote is indicative of Asian Americans’ rightward shift toward tougher crime policies like much of the state, analysts say. From March 2020 to December 2021, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders across the country reported nearly 11,000 hate incidents, including verbal and physical abuse, being coughed at or spat on, and facing discrimination in the workplace. “And a lot of people say, ‘Oh, we’ve moved on from that era.’ I don’t think Asian Americans have,” said James Zarsadiaz, author of “Resisting Change in Suburbia,” whose research focuses on Asian American conservatism. An Orange County, California, man has been arrested in connection with acts of vandalism in which anti-Asian slurs that were spray-painted over campaign signs for Democratic congressional candidate Dave Min, who’s Korean American. It comes after reports of two separate incidents in which signs were spray-painted with an anti-Korean derogatory term. A video documenting the vandalism, that was posted on the Democratic candidate’s social media, shows the hate speech, written in silver paint, across a row of signs. Police said they first responded to a report of vandalism last Tuesday, when they found Min signs defaced with the offensive language. “The Huntington Beach Police Department takes vandalism seriously, particularly when it involves hate speech,” the police said in a news release last week.

The poll showed that 66% of Asian American voters plan on backing Harris, while 28% say they’ll be voting for Trump. It featured 1,105 Asian American registered voter respondents, and reported a margin of error of plus or minus 5.1 percentage points. Before Harris entered the race, 46% of Asian American voters said they would choose Biden. Meanwhile, 28% of Asian American voters have a favorable opinion of Donald Trump, slightly down from previous polling. Tim Walz was found to be favorable among 56% of Asian American voters, more than twice the percentage that found Republican Sen. JD Vance favorable.

Asian American groups are sounding the alarm after the House this week passed a bill seeking to revive the highly controversial, Trump-era surveillance program the China Initiative. “Originally a Trump-era initiative sold as a national security measure, the China Initiative instead turned out to be a witch hunt,” leaders from civil rights groups Asian Americans Advancing Justice | AAJC, Stop AAPI Hate, and the Asian American Scholar Forum said in a joint statement. The groups added that the initiative devastated families and impeded the United States’ ability to retain and attract academic talent. Asian American advocacy groups have long been warning of the security program’s “chilling” effects. In the first college admissions process since the Supreme Court struck down affirmative action last year, Asian American enrollment at the most prestigious U.S. schools paints a mixed, uneven picture. Columbia University — which, unlike the other Ivies, groups Pacific Islanders with Asian Americans — saw an increase of nine percentage points in its enrollment of Asian American applicants, while Brown saw an increase of four percentage points. It doesn’t mean that race is entirely ruled out of the admissions process, however.
