Across the country, police bodycam footage has played an increasing role in raising awareness and understanding about officer-involved shootings. A Chicago police officer gives Dexter Reed several commands before gunfire breaks out. Other bodycam videos show at least two other officers firing toward Reed from across the street in the residential neighborhood. “Upon stopping Mr. Reed, multiple officers surrounded his vehicle while giving verbal commands. “Review of video footage and initial reports appears to confirm that Mr. Reed fired first, striking the officer and four officers returned fire,” the office said.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — The Illinois Supreme Court will hear an appeal of actor Jussie Smollett's disorderly conduct conviction for staging a racist and homophobic attack against himself in 2019, then lying to Chicago police about it. The court on Wednesday accepted the appeal from Smollett, formerly a cast member of the television drama “Empire.” It will review a December state appellate court ruling that upheld his 2021 conviction by a Cook County jury. A special prosecutor refiled charges against Smollett after Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx dropped the case and Smollett forfeited his $10,000 bond and conducted community service, which Smollett argues ended the case. Testimony at his trial indicated Smollett paid $3,500 to two men whom he knew from “Empire,” which was filmed in Chicago, to carry out the attack. ___Check out the Associated Press' complete coverage of the Jussie Smollett case.

If the appeal before the Chicago-based First District Appellate Court fails, Smollett would have to finish a 150-day stint in jail that his trial judge ordered during his 2022 sentencing. Smollett spent just six days in jail before his release pending the outcome of the appeal. In the appeal, Smollett’s legal team says chief prosecutor Kim Foxx’s office used proper discretion to drop the original charges four years ago. Authorities said Smollett paid two men he knew from work on the TV show “Empire” to stage the attack. As he sentenced Smollett, Judge Linn excoriated him as a narcissist and pronounced himself astounded by Smollett's actions given the actor’s multiracial family background and ties to social justice work.

Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg is leading the Trump investigation into Stormy Daniels' hush money payoff. He led the New York attorney general's successful 2018 lawsuit against the Donald J. Trump Foundation, which paid $2 million in court-ordered damages for illegally misusing charitable funds. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg speaks at a press conference after the sentencing hearing of the Trump Organization at the New York Supreme Court in New York City. Bragg is highly controversial for his approach to crimeBeyond the ongoing Trump investigation, Bragg has been harshly criticized for being too lenient while the city struggles with rising crime. Bragg's stance provoked instant blowback in New York City and in conservative media.
But the Trump question came to dominate the Democratic primary as the race entered its final stretch in 2021. As the district attorney’s investigation against the former president began to heat up, Mr. Bragg and his opponents started to signal to prospective voters that they had the bona fides to lead a potential prosecution of Mr. Trump. Mr. Bragg had some history to draw on. Still, as a candidate, Mr. Bragg was mostly focused elsewhere. When Mr. Bragg took office, and his prosecutors were presenting evidence about Mr. Trump and his businesses to a grand jury, the new district attorney stopped them, concerned that the case, which centered on whether Mr. Trump fraudulently inflated the value of his properties, was not strong enough to move forward.
R. Kelly is currently serving a 30-year prison sentence and is awaiting sentencing in another trial. The Cook County, Ill., state’s attorney’s office said it will no longer pursue indictments against R&B singer R. Kelly after his convictions in other cases. Nearly four years ago, Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx said Mr. Kelly had been charged with 10 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse involving four victims, three of whom were minors at the time.
A man who violently attacked Nancy Pelosi's husband, Paul Pelosi, may have been looking for her. Nancy Pelosi has faced several threats, including some that resulted in charges or conviction. "Nancy Pelosi is apart [sic] of a satanic cult and so are the people who work closely with her. A relative had informed her of a text Meredith sent in which he threatened Pelosi, prosecutors said. "The attacker who injured Paul Pelosi was looking for Nancy Pelosi, likely wanting to finish the job."
