Hyundai reveals all-electric Ioniq 9 three-row SUV
  + stars: | 2024-11-20 | by ( Michael Wayland | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: 1 min
Hyundai Motor's newest all-electric vehicle is the 2026 Ioniq 9 SUV — a three-row, up to seven-passenger SUV for the U.S. market. The new vehicle is Hyundai's largest EV entry to date, joining the smaller Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 all-electric vehicles in the carmaker's growing fleet. The Ioniq 9 is expected to arrive in U.S. dealerships in the spring. Hyundai declined to disclose pricing for the new SUV until closer to its arrival in showrooms. The Kia EV9, from Hyundai's sister brand and which is based on the same vehicle platform, currently starts at around $55,000.

The Toyota Highlander is one of the best-selling three-row family SUVs in the US. I was disappointed by its noisy engine, tepid performance, and limited passenger/cargo space. Go to newsletter preferences Thanks for signing up! AdvertisementFor much of its existence, the Toyota Highlander was a unicorn as the only three-row, midsize family SUV available as a hybrid. Sales took a 24% dip in 2023, due in large part to the introduction of the bigger Grand Highlander.

While EV sales fell in the first quarter of 2024 by more than 15% compared to the previous three months — their first drop since 2020 — hybrid sales are booming. CNN —Lydia Wu had never driven an electric vehicle before she rented a car from Avis last February. Rental car companies may have overestimated their customers’ readiness for a switch, though. Customer service as keyJoulez, an EV rental company, rents its fleet through its own website as well as through Turo. Toyota Motor is investing $1.3 billion in a Kentucky plant to produce a new all-electric, three-row SUV for the U.S. market, the company said Tuesday. The vehicle is expected to go into production between late 2025 and early 2026, according to a company spokeswoman. It is part of previously announced plans by the Japanese automaker to invest $35 billion in battery-electric vehicles, or BEVs, through 2030. The announcement comes as consumer adoption for EVs has been slower than many expected, causing some automakers to delay or cut investment plans for all-electric vehicles. The automaker continues to invest in hybrids, plug-in hybrid vehicles and other technologies such as hydrogen fuel cells.

But that is changing as companies rush to scale up EV battery tests - some of which take just minutes. "If the second-hand car market doesn't work properly, the new car market doesn't work properly and the electric transition won't happen," said Alex Johns, business development manager at Altelium, which says it has received interest from other markets including China. The race to properly value used EVs is becoming urgent because of a looming influx of vehicles. "People just want less risk," when buying a used EV, said Battery Quick Check managing director Katharina Alamo Alonso.

While charging and fueling trucks cost the same, other cars and their electric counterparts differ. It's not yet cheaper to charge some electric cars than to fuel them with gas, a new study suggests. It's not yet cheaper to charge many electric cars than it would be to fuel their gas-powered counterparts up with gas, a new study indicates. Trucks cost about the same to fuel and charge, while entry and midlevel cars and SUVs cost more to charge at home and in public than they do to fuel at a gas station, the group found. Luxury-segment EVs may cost less to charge at home than their gas counterparts would cost to fuel.

10 Things in Tech: Apple's big metaverse push
  + stars: | 2023-06-05 | by ( Hallam Bullock | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +4 min
This week, Apple is preparing to do what no tech firm has managed yet: make the metaverse cool. Apple is ready to enter its metaverse era, but the rest of the world might not be. Some people think it's unwise to ramp up efforts to push into the metaverse — especially at a time when the metaverse is said to be headed to the industry's graveyard of failed ideas. However, it's also unwise to bet against Apple — a company whose epic feats in tech have earned its leaders cult-like status. It's quick, stylish, and high-tech, Insider's Tim Levin writes, but it falls short in range and cargo space.
