A week of fierce demonstrations in Georgia has seen special forces violently handling protesters who are challenging the government’s controversial decision to delay its bid to join the European Union. Watchdogs say that many of the scores of people arrested over the past week have been subjected to brutal treatment by police and special forces. CNN spoke to 10 protesters, including five journalists and an opposition politician, who said they were beaten by special forces – masked, unidentifiable men. Mariam Nikuradze, a reporter at OC Media, said the special forces get “angry” when they see their actions being filmed. Elene Khoshtaria, founder of the Droa party which Gvamaria represented, told CNN that police had stormed their offices on Wednesday. Following the vote, Georgia’s opposition parties said they would boycott parliament. Earlier this year, Levan Khabeishvili, then-chair of the United National Movement – Georgia’s foremost opposition party – said he was brutally beaten by special forces. Khabeishvili told CNN he had since stepped down as party chair, citing the effect the beating had on his health. Asked for comment, Georgia’s interior ministry told CNN that Gvamaria had been arrested over charges relating to “disobedience to the police.”

Ivanishvili had vowed to ban the opposition if his party won the election, and his opponents are taking him at his word. On Saturday, as Georgians cast their ballots, thousands of Georgian and international election observers fanned out to voting precincts across the country, from urban centers to poor, remote villages in the Caucasus mountains, trying to evaluate whether the vote was free and fair. Throughout election day, video of violations, some of them egregious, like a man boldly jamming ballots into a ballot box, spread quickly. “She is on the right side of history,” said opposition politician Nika Gvaramia. The illiberal leader has found common cause with Georgia’s ruling party and was the first international leader to congratulate them after the election – even before the votes were officially tallied.

A cruise ship with Russian passengers docked in Batumi, Georgia, was met with jeers from the locals protesting over the Ukraine war and over disputed territories currently occupied by Russia. Videos shared by Twitter users on Monday captured chaotic scenes of protestors in Georgia heckling the cruise ship after it arrived for the second time in five days. It will only stop when the Russian cruise ship leaves, hopefully earlier than scheduled." Local media outlet Formula News tweeted a video of protestors on Monday: "Protesters condemn the arrival of Russian cruise ship carrying pop stars and journalists supporting the Russian invasion of Ukraine in the Georgian port city of Batumi."
