Pipad Krajaejun, a history lecturer at Bangkok’s Thammasat University, says it’s difficult to pinpoint exactly when the water fights became such a key part of the festival. Kachin media outlets said 30 people were killed and blamed the artillery strike on the military. Kachin media shared a series of graphic images on Facebook of destruction, which could not immediately be verified by Reuters. Others showed men in military attire sifting through wreckage and a man carrying the body of a small child. The incident was the deadliest since an air strike in Myanmar's volatile Sagaing region in April that killed scores of people including civilians. CNN —A “mesmerizing” electric blue tarantula species has been discovered in Thailand, according to new research. “(We found) a new species of tarantula that exhibits a mesmerizing blue-violet hue, reminiscent of electric blue sparks,” Narin Chomphuphuang, a researcher at Khon Kaen University’s Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology, told CNN Monday. “Blue is one of the rarest colors to appear in nature, which makes blue coloration in animals particularly fascinating,” Chomphuphuang said. The US Coast Guard said Wednesday it is monitoring a Russian ship near Hawaii. The Coast Guard said the ship is believed to be gathering intelligence. "The Coast Guard operates in accordance with international laws of the sea to ensure all nations can do the same without fear or contest. The Coast Guard said it was coordinating with the Department of Defense to provide updates on the movement of the foreign ships. In May, the US Indo-Pacific Command said it was monitoring a Russian vessel near Hawaii.
