CNN —Russian forces have made two cross border assaults inside northern Ukraine, according to information from Ukrainian sources and officials – in what President Volodymyr Zelensky is calling a ‘new wave of counteroffensive actions” by Russia. In the first development, Russian soldiers penetrated at least one kilometre towards the town of Vovchansk, a Ukrainian military source told CNN. The source said the Russian ground assault towards Krasne was carried out by four Russian battalions - about 2000 men. “But our military and military command were aware of this and anticipated their forces to meet the enemy with fire. Syniehubov insisted the latest Russian ground assaults did not put the city, which lies just 30 kms south from the Russian border, under heightened risk.

KYIV (Reuters) - Russia launched a missile strike on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities during Wednesday morning rush hours, Ukraine's Air Force said, with several blasts heard in the country's capital when air defence systems were engaged in repelling the attack. The loud blasts were heard in Kyiv just before 7 a.m. (0500 GMT), Reuters' witnesses reported. Kyiv's Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on the Telegram messaging app that air defence systems were engaged. All of Ukraine was under an air raid alert, starting at around 6 a.m., with Ukraine's Air Force warning on Telegram of a risk of a Russian missile attack. Oleh Sinehubov, governor of the Kharkiv region in Ukraine's northeast, said Russian missiles struck non-residential infrastructure in Kharkiv city, the administrative centre of the region.

He also shared video and images of a fire blazing in Kharkiv city and said eight residents received medical attention on the spot, but nobody was injured. The U.S. government on Thursday imposed sweeping new sanctions against Moscow over its invasion of Ukraine, with almost 100 new measures targeting energy production, mining and defense. It also included new measures to clamp down on sanctions evasion in the United Arab Emirates, Turkey and China. Russia's Wagner Group has reportedly begun recruiting fighters again several months after the death of founder Yevgeny Prigozhin, according to Russian media reports.
