President-elect Donald Trump announced his pick for American ambassador to Panama, days after suggesting that the United States should take control of the Panama Canal. “I am pleased to announce that Kevin Marino Cabrera will serve as the United States Ambassador to the Republic of Panama, a Country that is ripping us off on the Panama Canal, far beyond their wildest dreams,” Trump posted on the social media platform Truth Social late Wednesday. “The sovereignty and independence of our country is non-negotiable,” Mulino stated in a video posted to social media last weekend. The Panama Canal is a critical trade route that was originally built by the United States in 1904. The Panama Canal Authority, an independent government agency, administers the canal today.

President-elect Donald Trump took aim at Canada, Greenland and the Panama Canal in a series of Christmas Day social media posts that suggested the United States could take control of all three. Trump has recently suggested that his administration could obtain control of the Panama Canal, criticizing the fees Panama has charged to use it. The two countries shared operation of the canal until 1999, when Panama took full control of it under the agreement. When it comes to Canada, Trump in recent weeks has also mocked Trudeau as the “governor” of Canada while warning of tariffs on the country. Fox News reported this month that Trump also raised the possibility directly to Trudeau during a dinner at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.

Trump named Miami-Dade County Commissioner Kevin Marino Cabrera as his choice for the post after suggesting that the US should take control of the Panama Canal – a proposal he first floated over the weekend while claiming that Panama is “ripping off” American ships that pass through the waterway. “I am pleased to announce that Kevin Marino Cabrera will serve as the United States Ambassador to the Republic of Panama, a Country that is ripping us off on the Panama Canal, far beyond their wildest dreams,” Trump said in a statement. In a sardonic Christmas message, Trump claimed Chinese soldiers are operating the Panama Canal and reiterated his criticism that Panama is exploiting US vessels that use the waterway. In the same message, Trump called Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau “governor,” again insinuating Canada should become a US state.
