WASHINGTON — Republican senators are preparing for a robust vetting of Matt Gaetz, President-elect Donald Trump's pick to lead the Justice Department, with a keen interest in details from a House Ethics Committee investigation into the former congressman from Florida. The Ethics Committee has jurisdiction only over sitting House members. Many Republican senators, including members of the GOP-led Judiciary Committee that will oversee Gaetz’s nomination for attorney general, said they'll want to see the details of the House Ethics investigation into Gaetz. But Gaetz's resignation complicates things, and the House committee hasn't indicated what it will do. Former President Donald Trump said he plans to vote yes on a ballot measure in Florida to legalize marijuana, his clearest stance so far on the issue. He wrote that arrests for marijuana possession of "personal amounts" waste taxpayers' dollars and suggested that the ballot measure would help prevent deaths from fentanyl-laced marijuana. If passed, the ballot measure would permit residents over 21 to possess, buy or consume marijuana recreationally. Ron DeSantis opposes the marijuana ballot measure and most congressional Republicans have in recent years voted against bills to reform U.S. policy on marijuana. Trump last month seemed to signal some support for another ballot measure in Florida: one that would expand abortion access.

Mitch McConnell had long prided himself on maintaining GOP unity during his 17-year tenure as Senate GOP leader. Now they’ve spilled into public view as the Kentucky Republican heads into what could be his final year as leader. “We did what Donald Trump wanted.”With McConnell’s backing, the Senate is now taking a different approach. “Sen Cruz talks every day with his colleagues, and his conversations with fellow senators are confidential,” the Cruz spokesperson said. Sen. Tommy Tuberville, a Republican from Alabama and close Trump ally, said that “everybody” has concerns about McConnell’s handling of the talks.

Four Republicans joined all House Democrats in voting down what would have been the first impeachment of a Cabinet official in nearly 150 years. Mayorkas' impeachment was not expected to go anywhere. But senators from both parties have repeatedly made clear that they have a particular ire reserved for Mayorkas' impeachment. Before Tuesday's vote, McClintock issued a scathing 10-page letter to his colleagues denouncing their impeachment push. "[T]aking the course outlined by the [Homeland Security Committee] is bad politics and bad policy," McClintock wrote in his letter.
