It was a familiar scene Friday for Team USA in the men's 4x100-meter relay, as their formidable speed was halted once again by a botched baton pass. The U.S. men's team entered the relay final as gold medal favorites, in theory, as the reigning world champions and fastest qualifiers. Christian Coleman of the United States struggles to hand the baton to teammate Kenneth Bednarek in the men's 4x100-meter relay final on Friday. Women's 100-meter silver medalist Sha'Carri Richardson anchored the U.S. effort, earning her first Olympic gold. It's the U.S. women's 12th Olympic medal in the event and their win was an improvement on their second-place finish in Tokyo.

PARIS — Two days after Noah Lyles said he tested positive for Covid, the American sprinter finished third in the 200-meter final at the Paris Olympics, unable to chase down gold medalist Letsile Tebogo of Botswana. Lyles ran 19.70 for bronze, behind Tebogo's 19.46, which earned the first gold medal in Botswana's history. Following his positive test, Lyles said he moved into a hotel away from the Olympic Village to quarantine himself and arrived for warmups before Wednesday's semifinal with a mask on. He said he never considered not competing in Thursday's final and intentionally did not disclose information about his diagnosis. At the finish line Lyles collapsed, then gingerly stood while asking for water and sitting back down on the track.

"Like I said it before, I had to be kicked out from another 100 metres race, so I had to do my best no matter what. I am really happy with my race, third place is a good start and the time is decent," she said. "I feel really good, today was challenging for all athletes but I'm still satisfied with my result," Chopra said. The Czech Republic's Jakub Vadlejch, who won silver in Tokyo, finished second again -- four centimetres shy of Chopra's mark. "It was an exciting race but a little bit windy, so I decided to not push too much and just focus on winning the race," Kipyegon said.
