As the announcement trilled out over Kenilworth Road, the jumble of rusted metal and peeling paint that Luton Town F.C. At the start of the sentence, it was little more than the traditional polite welcome to the stadium for that evening’s visiting team, Manchester City. By the end, though, the voice of the announcer seemed overcome by what sounded a little like awe. Cup, the champions of England and the champions of Europe.” Luton seems to be having a hard time believing the company it now keeps. Fifteen years ago, Luton Town had been relegated to the fifth tier of English soccer, a world away from the power and the prestige of the Premier League.

Pete Rozelle’s immediate reaction could not accurately be described as unbridled enthusiasm. He had, for the last three years, been the general manager of the Los Angeles Rams. They wanted to put him in charge of the whole league. It was an offer, in Rozelle’s mind, that he had to refuse. “You’ve got to be kidding,” he told them, according to Michael MacCambridge’s magisterial history of the league, “America’s Game.” “That is the most ludicrous thing I have ever heard.”

Luton earned their first point of the campaign against 10-man Wolves after Carlton Morris cancelled out Pedro Neto's opener in a 1-1 draw. We've got that off our backs," Edwards told BBC Sport after the bottom side became the last team to get on the scoreboard in the league standings. "It shows at this level how hard you have to work, almost perfect to get something from the game. We showed character to come back into the game," Edwards added. I'm not saying we should have got something from the game, I'm saying we should have won."

Everton registered their first league victory of the season, producing an impressive display to win 3-1 at Brentford whose home struggles continued. "We played, I would say, 51, 52 minutes 10 against 11, so it was not easy, but we were fantastic," City manager Pep Guardiola said. Everton's James Tarkowski scored against his former club in a well-deserved 3-1 win at Brentford's Community Stadium. Victory lifted Everton out of the relegation zone and up to 15th with four points, with Brentford, without a home win this season, 12th on six. It secured Luton's first point in the top flight since April 1992 and they might have been celebrating a win.

Manchester United also got a much-needed 1-0 win at Burnley to snap a run of three straight defeats in all competitions. Everton registered their first league victory of the season, producing an impressive display to triumph 3-1 at Brentford whose home struggles continued. A City win never looked in doubt once Kyle Walker set up Foden to thump in the opener after a 46-pass move and Haaland headed powerfully into the net from a cross by Matheus Nunes. "We played, I would say, 51, 52 minutes 10 against 11, so it was not easy, but we were fantastic," City manager Pep Guardiola said. LUTON, England, Sept 1 (Reuters) - Pacesetters West Ham United claimed a 2-1 Premier League victory at Luton Town thanks to headers by Jarrod Bowen and Kurt Zouma on Friday to spoil the hosts' much-anticipated first top-flight game at their snug Kenilworth Road stadium in 31 years. I don't score many headers," said Bowen, the first West Ham player since 1930 to score in their first three away games. "We showed the character to deal with the atmosphere," West Ham manager David Moyes told the BBC. "Good against a tough team who are going to put teams under a lot of pressure. New signing Ross Barkley launched a left-foot effort moments later that sailed just wide of the West Ham goal.

But anticipation is building for the visit of West Ham, who will become the first top-flight team to play a league match at Kenilworth Road since Aston Villa 31 years ago. The volume created by the Hatters fans crammed in on Friday will shake the 118-year-old stadium to its foundations. Forward Cauley Woodrow, who scored in the League Cup win at Kenilworth Road against Gillingham this week, said Luton needed to turn their home into an intimidating 'fortress'. Arsenal's priority will be avoiding any repeat of the early goals they have conceded on a regular basis at home of late. Andreas Pereira's strike for Fulham after 57 seconds last weekend meant the Gunners became the first Premier League team to concede a first-minute goal three times in a calendar year.

BURNLEY, England, Aug 27 (Reuters) - Defender Matty Cash scored twice in the first half as Aston Villa won 3-1 at Burnley in the Premier League on Sunday to continue their winning run. Watkins and substitute Nicolo Zaniolo spurned late golden opportunities but Villa coasted to a second league win and provisionally climbed to sixth in the standings. Burnley's second straight loss left them down in 18th, though they have played only two games after last week's fixture at Luton Town was postponed due to stadium works at Kenilworth Road. Burnley travel to Nottingham Forest in the League Cup on Wednesday and Villa host Hibernian in the second leg of a Europa Conference League playoff tie on Thursday. Villa won the first leg 5-0.

LONDON, Aug 17 (Reuters) - Newcastle United face the first big test of their Premier League title aspirations on Saturday but the trip to champions Manchester City could be coming at the right time for the table-topping Magpies. "Thank you so much to the Premier League for letting us play on Saturday, and not on Sunday and Monday," Guardiola said sarcastically of the 72-hour turnaround from Wednesday's game. Newcastle have yet to win a Premier League match at The Etihad but the arrival of Italy's Sandro Tonali has boosted an already strong midfield featuring Brazil internationals Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton. Guimaraes explained on a Brazilian podcast last month how much he has hated playing City in the past, so good were their players. Liverpool are overwhelming favourites to win their first home league game of the season against Bournemouth on Saturday, a side they thumped 9-0 at Anfield last August to equal the Premier League record.

The hope is for "a completely new treatment paradigm in cancer that will be better tolerated and unique to individual patients' tumors," said Dr. Jane Healy, an executive overseeing in early cancer treatment development at Merck. The Merck/Moderna collaboration is one of several combining powerful drugs that unleash the immune system to target cancers with mRNA vaccine technology. Aiming at these unique proteins allows the immune system to kill cancer cells while leaving healthy tissue unscathed. With standard treatment, 90% of pancreatic cancer patients die within five years of diagnosis. The approach first primes the immune system with an older technology called a chimpanzee adenovirus vaccine that targets patients' tumors.

Jones had led Luton to automatic promotion from League Two and even a Championship playoff semi-final in two spells but left in November when they were ninth, leaving Luton in a predicament. Luton will join Burnley and Sheffield United, who won automatic promotion as Championship winners and runners-up, in next season's Premier League. REUTERS/Andrew KellyApril 3 (Reuters) - A Delaware judge on Monday dismissed Merck & Co's (MRK.N) lawsuit seeking to hold Bayer AG (BAYGn.DE) responsible for more talc-related liabilities stemming from its $14.2 billion purchase of Merck's consumer care business in 2014. Bayer welcomed the decision, saying that it expected Merck to "take full responsibility for the product claims". "Bayer will continue to defend itself against any further efforts by Merck to avoid or improperly transfer its liabilities to Bayer," the company said in a statement. The $14.2 billion purchase also included Merck's Claritin allergy medicine and Coppertone sunscreen lines. The case is Merck & Co v. Bayer AG, Delaware Chancery Court, No.
The company said a possible melanoma vaccine it is studying with pharmaceutical giant Merck fared well in a small study of patients who had the cancer surgically removed. The drugmakers said a combination of the vaccine and Merck’s immunotherapy Keytruda led to a statistically significant improvement in survival before the cancer returned in patients with advanced melanoma. “We are very excited, we are moving very quickly with Merck onto phase 3 for this study,” Moderna CEO Stephane Bancel told CNBC Tuesday morning. Like Spikevax, the potential skin cancer vaccine uses mRNA technology. The patient group that took the potential vaccine and Keytruda saw a 44% reduction in the risk of death or the cancer returning, the companies said.
