Amazon hopes consumers will install Alexa-enabled devices in more rooms of their homes and become accustomed to using the system throughout the day, the sources said. Amazon has said its devices and services business is not profitable, without providing figures. Amazon is set to name as successor Microsoft's Panos Panay who oversaw development of the Surface, according to Bloomberg. Alexa employees were included in rounds of layoffs beginning last year resulting in 27,000 job cuts across Amazon. For years, Amazon has said it can sell devices for close to production cost and see a profit through services offered on them.

Ken Washington, VP of consumer robotics, is leaving Amazon. Amazon's VP of consumer robotics Ken Washington is leaving the company, according to an internal email seen by Insider. At Amazon, he was in charge of the consumer robotics unit, which oversees Astro, the home monitoring robot that remains invite-only 18 months after its launch. Amazon executive Dave Limp AP/Jeff ChiuIn an email to Insider, Amazon's spokesperson confirmed Washington's departure. Amazon's spokesperson told Insider the invite requests for Astro "remain strong" and it plans to add "even more new features."
VP of consumer robotics Ken Washington reaffirmed commitment to home robots in an email to employees last week. Washington's team is primarily in charge of Astro, the home-roaming robot Amazon revealed last year. While the company has been unusually vague about layoff details, one team appears to have continued support: consumer robotics. Washington reports to Dave Limp, Amazon's SVP of Devices and Services, who confirmed layoffs in a team-wide email last week. "We are committed to the future of consumer robots and, as Dave said, we will further prioritize what matters most to our customers and the business," Washington wrote in the email.
Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney conceded defeat early Wednesday morning. Maloney is the leader of House Democrats' campaign arm. "In New York, we defeated Sean Patrick Maloney," House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy boasted early Wednesday morning long before Maloney conceded. "Last night, House Democrats stood our ground," he told reporters on Wednesday. Maloney's demise may be greeted with a degree of schadenfreude by House Democrats.
Last week, at Amazon's re:MARS technology conference in Las Vegas, the e-commerce giant and other technology companies in attendance showed off the latest in robotics. I noticed there weren't bold marketing proclamations of "robot butlers" or "AI dogs" as I walked the show floor. The robots were designed to look more practical, and many of the devices could only do a few simple tasks. Take Amazon's Astro robot, for example. Amazon says it was most surprised to find that users want more features that let Astro interact with their pets.
