So far this year, hedge fund managers have failed to beat the S & P 500 , one of the cheapest, easily available investment vehicles for ordinary investors. Hedge funds returned just 5% in the first half of the year after a 0.2% loss in June, with event-driven strategies the biggest laggards, according to data firm HFR. The performance may come as a disappointment as hedge funds often tout star stock pickers and niche strategies to justify their high fees. Hedge funds typically charge a 2% management fee on the total assets under management plus a performance fee of 20% of the fund's profits. Goldman Sachs' prime brokerage data showed hedge funds have been rotating out of tech stocks, especially winning chipmakers over the past few weeks, while pouring into financial stocks and commodities.

The launch of Jain Global has dominated industry gossip since its founder left Millennium Management, where the 53-year-old Jain was Izzy Englander's right-hand man, in late 2022. OpenAI is facing controversy. Again.

In today's big story, we're looking at the latest controversy to embroil OpenAI amid a difficult few months for the startup . Their takeaway was simple: OpenAI wants to have it both ways regarding how it's perceived about safety and commercialization. It's structured as a "capped-profit" company governed by a nonprofit, and Altman doesn't hold equity directly in OpenAI. The result, the VC told me, is people feel OpenAI is talking out of both sides of its mouth. It doesn't help that some OpenAI employees joined when that split was closer to 80/20 and favored safety over business, they added.

GameStop shares rallied more than 40% in premarket trading Monday after "Roaring Kitty," the man who inspired the epic short squeeze of 2021, posted online for the first time in roughly three years. Roaring Kitty, whose legal name is Keith Gill, is a former marketer for Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance. Currently, the short position in GameStop shares amounts to more than 24% of all its shares that are freely-available to trade, also known as the float. In response, one Robinhood user filed a class-action lawsuit following the app's decision to restrict GameStop trading on its platform. Another class-action lawsuit brought against Gill alleged that he pretended to be a novice trader despite being a licensed professional.

The portfolio manager whisperers

AdvertisementHistorically, a hedge fund's chief investment office or senior portfolio manager was responsible for vetting and wooing key investment hires. They can also help hedge funds save on outside recruiting costs, which can add up to tens of millions a year. Hedge funds targeted institutional salespeople at investment banks with exposure to hedge funds, as well as asset allocators with chops in portfolio-manager selection and due diligence. Assets at multimanager hedge funds have boomed since 2018. The principle may work for fictional baseball diamonds, but the reality at hedge funds is more complicated.
