CNN —Tupac Shakur may be on the path to winning a Grammy Award posthumously. Shakur received the nod for the FX five-part docuseries “Dear Mama,” which takes its name from his 1995 single of the same title. Shakur is competing against two other late artists - David Bowie for “Moonage Daydream” and Little Richard for “I Am Everything” (which premiered on CNN.) Bowie died following a battle with cancer in 2016, and Little Richard died in 2020, also of cancer related causes. Little Richard was famously vocal when he was alive about never having received a Grammy.

A section of MacArthur Boulevard near where he lived in the 1990s became Tupac Shakur Way, following a ceremony that included his family members and Oakland native MC Hammer. The sign for Tupac Shakur Way was unveiled moments later. “He said Oakland gave him his game.”The ceremony came the day after a former Southern California street gang leader pleaded not guilty to murder in the Las Vegas shooting death of Shakur. Sekyiwa Shakur said her brother “died at 25 years old in gang violence, by the hands of another Black man, by the planning of another Black man, whoever that man may be."

A man who for years has said he was a critical player in the gang-orchestrated shooting of the rapper Tupac Shakur pleaded not guilty on Thursday to a charge of murder with a deadly weapon, following an indictment that thrust the dormant case back into public view. The man, Duane Keith Davis, known as Keffe D, has spoken and written about how he was inside the vehicle from which shots were fired at Mr. Shakur in 1996. Wearing a dark blue inmate’s outfit and cuffs on his wrists and ankles, Mr. Davis, 60, looked directly at the judge as he entered his plea, asking for clarification when the prosecutors said they did not plan to ask for the death penalty in the case. His arraignment had been delayed for weeks because he previously did not have a lawyer to represent him. At Thursday’s hearing, Mr. Davis was represented by the public defender’s office, though he told the judge that he hoped to retain Ross Goodman, a high-profile defense lawyer whose parents have both served as the mayor of Las Vegas.

Here's a look at the hours that led up to the fatal gunfire. At about 8:30 p.m., Shakur and Knight took their front row seats at the fight at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Surveillance video showed Shakur and Knight kicking and punching Anderson near a bank of elevators, police said. Shortly before 9 p.m., Shakur, Knight and their entourage left the MGM Grand. Shakur and Knight joked with the officers, the license plates were found in the trunk and they did not get a ticket.
