This is the opening scene from “The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert”, which first screened at Cannes Film Festival 30 years ago this month. In the film, Tick (Hugo Weaving) and Bernadette (Terence Stamp) help Adam (Guy Pearce) realize his dream of climbing King Canyon in full drag. “I think that’s definitely one of the most iconic looks,” drag artist and costumer Philmah Bocks told CNN. Bocks has been designing costumes for 30 years, having broken into the drag scene around the same time “Priscilla” was hitting screens. The film’s legacy can also be seen in Australia’s drag scene today and, since 2021, has been broadcast to new audiences via contestants on “Rupaul’s Drag Race Down Under”.

New York CNN —Big Tech is racing to address the stream of A.I.-generated images inundating social media platforms before the machine-crafted renderings further contaminate the information space. TikTok announced on Thursday that it will begin labeling A.I.-generated content. (Notably, Elon Musk’s X has not announced any plans to label A.I.-generated content.) Social media giants have reams of rules prohibiting certain content on their platforms, but history has repeatedly shown that they have often failed to adequately enforce them and allowed malicious content to spread to the masses before taking action. That poor record doesn’t inspire much confidence as A.I.-created images increasingly bombard the information environment — particularly as the U.S. hurtles toward an unprecedented election with democracy itself at stake.

Every Gala has a dress code, which is tethered to the exhibition. All of which makes it easy to forget this is actually an important fund-raiser for one of New York’s cultural pillars: the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. It was once a free-standing museum, but when it merged with the Met in 1946, part of the deal was that the Costume Institute would have to pay for itself. Hence the gala, which raises all the funds for the institute’s operating budget. The Costume Institute itself has historically been housed in the museum’s basement — a clear statement about its status at the museum.

CNN —Katy Perry did not attend the Met Gala on Monday, but some of the singer’s fans – and even her mom – thought she did. Pictures of the singer seemingly taken at the event circulated on X, but they were created through artificial intelligence (AI). The fake photos included Perry dressed in looks that fit the Met Gala’s garden theme this year. Perry also included a text from her mom, who complimented her on her gown. Her mom wrote, “Ha Feather!

On Friday, the head of the exclusive hotel and social club chain Soho House said the company saw a record rise in non-alcoholic drink sales during this year's Dry January. "What we also saw in January was a much bigger spike in non-alcoholic beverage consumption, much more than we've ever seen before," said Andrew Carnie, the chief executive officer of Soho House, on the company's earnings call. The Soho House brand has long prided itself on being associated with all things cool and en vogue — and the low-to-no booze trend is no exception. Millennials are the most interested in non-alcoholic drinks, compared with older and younger peers, per ISWR. UK bar revenues in January were down 11.5% compared with the same period in 2023, according to market researcher CGA.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Underneath his umbrella, NFL legend Dan Marino stood nearly drenched on the sideline watching Prince’s epic “Purple Rain” Super Bowl halftime performance in 2007 during a torrential Miami downpour. “The halftime performance has come a long way,” said the Hall of Fame quarterback who played 17 seasons with the Miami Dolphins and competed in the 1985 Super Bowl. His show will be vastly different than the NFL’s first Super Bowl halftime show in 1967, which featured marching bands from the University of Arizona and Grambling State University, a historically Black college, along with hundreds of flying pigeons, thousands of balloons and two soaring men wearing jetpacks. After the inaugural Super Bowl, the NFL kept bringing back other marching bands, drill teams, signed Chubby Checker and Up with People, an organization that stage positive thinking through dance and song performances. Dudowsky recalled when Coldplay frontman Chris Martin said the “Super Bowl of music is the Super Bowl.” He said the halftime show has been able to grow thanks to the NFL's ability to adjust to the current culture and giving deserving artists the platform to express their artistry.

FTX Founder Sam Bankman-Fried leaves Manhattan Federal Court after a court appearance on June 15, 2023 in New York City. The main thing the jury has to decide, Roos said, is whether Bankman-Fried knew that taking the money was wrong. "It was uncomfortable to hear," Roos said, adding that Bankman-Fried said "I can't recall" over 140 times during questioning by the government. Roos said Bankman-Fried is the one who gave special privileges to Alameda, which he started before founding FTX, allowing it to siphon customer money. Prosecutors entered corroborating materials, including encrypted Signal messages and other internal documents that appear to show Bankman-Fried orchestrating the spending of FTX customer money. Similarly, Bankman-Fried testified that he believed the lavish Bahamas properties were being paid for with FTX operating cash that came from revenue and venture investments. As for the venture investments, Bankman-Fried said he thought that money was coming from Alameda's operating profits and third-party lending desks. Alameda's venture arm was renamed Clifton Bay Investments, which Bankman-Fried said was a first step in building a dedicated venture brand. When asked about loans he took from the business, Bankman-Fried said they were to pay for venture investments and political donations.
